Meet Deborah Abernethy of Deborah Abernethy Appraisers

Today we’d like to introduce you to Deborah Abernethy.

Deborah, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I am a small business. I do not employ a large number of people, generate huge amounts of revenue, or seek the limelight. But I believe success can be measured in many ways. My definition of success is that I enjoy my work and generate an income to adequately support myself and raise a family.

After many years of being interested in antiques and artwork (and two degrees in related fields, a post-graduate certificate program, and courses from appraisal organizations), I completed the requirements to become a certified appraiser. The practical side of decorating (i.e. value or money involved) was always important. That led me to search out “the true value of objects” and hence, the appraisal business.

The “plus” side of my work is that every day is different and that I constantly experience new things. This is the type of occupation in which one must spend time in continuing education and staying abreast of new developments in the industry.

What does it take to run a successful business? It takes a lot, so develop a plan utilizing your skills and interests. If you do every JOB to the best of your ABILITY, is should be something that is really YOU. I think my age entitles me to offer a few words of wisdom for other business owners: Time is our most precious resource, so use it wisely. Make a plan for your business, evaluate it on a regular basis and make changes if needed, and then, stick to it. Improve yourself and your business skills. Don’t waste time comparing yourself to others. If you make a mistake, admit it and try to correct it.

Has it been a smooth road?
There will always be struggles. There are struggles with the economy that we may have little control of. We will all have our health struggles. Most of us have family issues, sometimes little ones like being kept up all night with a sick baby. And sometimes there can be a serious life/death issues to deal with. Many of us have been through the decline in health of parents and the resulting loss of them.
