Meet Decatur Photographer: Mathieu Channer

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mathieu Channer.

Mathieu, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I am a 19 year old, self-taught photographer and retoucher located in Atlanta Georgia. I stared doing photography approximately a year and a half ago. My journey into the world of this art took place when I found a fascination in capturing everything around me on my mother’s digital point and shoot camera. I found myself mostly taking macro shots of things such as spiders and flowers. A friend saw my growing passion for this and bought me a more sophisticated point and shoot camera. After getting the new camera I was faced with learning how to manually use a camera, which ended up to be very easy for me. I started taking more interesting and detailed macro shots, mostly insects. People started telling me they look like images you would see in nature magazines. I soon shifted my focus from insect macro to landscapes. I had just moved to Atlanta and was getting to know downtown. I would travel downtown on the bus and walk around for hours, taking images. I soon bought my first DSLR and went on doing landscape photography until the end of 2015. During the beginning of 2016, I switch to portrait photography. It is my burning passion and I love capturing the expressions of people. I have reached where I am today in my portrait photography because of the support I receive from family and friends along with networking on social media. Persistence and having a burning passion for this beautiful art has also played a role in why I am where I am today.

Has it been a smooth road?
I have had a number of setbacks while doing photography. One of my biggest setbacks has been my age. When people hear nineteen, for the most part, they are deterred from working with me, but my age has nothing to do with my work. I let my level of professionalism, business ethic, and the quality of my work speak for me now.

Is there some part of you work that is particularly difficult?
The hardest part of my job is networking. When you are just starting out it is extremely hard to make a name for yourself, especially when there are other people out there doing exactly what you do. It is vital that you set yourself apart from everyone both artistically and ethically.

How do you define success?
I believe that success is accomplishing goals that you have set for yourself, wether small or large. I believe in upholding specific standards. The way you conduct yourself, talk to people and the quality of your work along with the way you network.

So, what should we be on the lookout for, what’s next in store for you?
I plan to be a large scale portrait and fashion/commercial photographer. I also have plans to have my work internationally published in world-renowned magazines.
