Today we’d like to introduce you to DeeJae Hann.
Hi DeeJae, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
Hi, I am DeeJae Hann and I started off my journey in radio production as an intern at one of Atlanta’s number one hip-hop stations, Streetz945 ATL. I had just graduated from Atlanta Metropolitan State College with my associates of science and decided I no longer wanted to pursue law. At that time I felt like criminal justice wasn’t for me and I didn’t want to be buried in more paperwork, more classes, and not really enjoying what I want to do in life. Honestly, I got that degree to make my mom happy. So there I was, a working college graduate with a degree I had no intention on putting to use and back at square one. I had the bright idea that I could just start over and that’s exactly what I did. One day while headed to work, I was listening to the radio and heard a commercial about an internship opportunity and immediately signed up. After I went through an extensive interview process, I worked my way up, gained so much knowledge from the mentors I’ve gained over the years and I’ve been in radio ever since. The end of 2024 marked my ten year journey in radio and I’m very happy about that.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Any road you travel in life that’s really meant for you isn’t meant to be easy. I know that sounds crazy but think about it, if it comes easy, is it really for you? I wouldn’t say I’ve had many struggles but I’ve had them. For me my struggle was literally starting a new career in media with little to no experience, no job in the media field and no credentials. Although that’s where I started, I didn’t allow what I lacked to overcome my vision. I wanted it so bad that I enrolled back in school to work on my bachelors degree so that I could continue interning at Streetz945 ATL. I applied for remote Internships that pertained to radio and mass media so that I could help myself be better. I knew that everything I was putting in would get me to where I want to be eventually. I knew that I would get a job in media as long as i focused, worked hard and stayed dedicated.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
As a radio producer, I am responsible for the creative and technical production of radio programs. This means managing everything from initial ideas, booking talent such as artist, comedians, community leaders, state officials and more. I also have to manage time, show segments and final broadcast. I work closely with program directors, on-air talent, other engineers, and other team members to bring all of the innovative ideas we have to life. I am known for Photography, videography and being a social media specialists which allowed me to build great relationships with many people in the media feild. What sets me apart from others is that i am versatile, I love constructive criticism because it makes me better and I’m willing to sit back and learn all aspects of what it takes to operate any company. I can work with just about anyone and train them up to be the best they can be so that we all can win as a team.
Can you share something surprising about yourself?
Most people don’t know that I’m actually a quiet person. I am my only child so growing up I really didn’t have many people to talk to if I wasn’t around my family members or at school. My career causes for me to be a social butterfly so I’m really happy that I have that balance in my life.
