Meet Deja Williams of Georgia Kinship Project

Today we’d like to introduce you to Deja Williams.

Deja Williams

Hi Deja, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I am the founder and Executive Director of the Georgia Kinship Project. Georgia Kinship Project was founded in October 2020 following an experience of working with the Department of Family and Children services within the kinship unit. While working in this unit, I observed gaps in service available to relative caregivers parenting their relative’s children at risk for entering foster care. I founded this organization to address the gaps in services for relative caregivers. I was raised by a relative caregiver after my mother passed away, so, this work is a personal part of my story.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
There have been numerous challenges along the way. There were other people in the nonprofit sector within my region who found the organization to be a ‘threat’ to their access to limited grant funds in the Central Georgia community. Additionally, this journey has been a learning process on how to run a nonprofit organization, write grants, manage staff, and so much more.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Georgia Kinship Project Inc.?
The Georgia Kinship Project is a unique initiative that caters to a population that is either unknown or underserved. It is the only organization in central Georgia that provides kin-specific services. By offering such services, the project creates a dedicated space for relative caregivers to receive support that many were not able to receive from the public child welfare system. It is noteworthy that the organization aspires to expand its reach to other parts of the state, particularly in South Georgia where resources are scarce. The project has made significant strides in growth and achievements in just three years of existence, and we take pride in its accomplishments. As a specialist in kinship care and the public child welfare system, I am confident that the Georgia Kinship Project will continue to make a positive impact on the lives of those it serves.
