Today we’d like to introduce you to DeMarlo West.
DeMarlo West, professionally known as D’Marlo, is an independent singer, entrepreneur, professional makeup artist, fashion influencer, and musician. D’Marlo is originally from Milledgeville, Georgia but lives in Atlanta, Georgia. He began singing and playing the piano at the age of five years old. Paternally and maternally, his family is all musically talented. His parents encouraged him to use his gift that God gave him and to share the knowledge of Jesus to the world. D’Marlo’s father Larry West was a major influence and contributor to his musical gift. Pop West affectionately known as “Mo” was a singer, songwriter, and choreographer for many years for his R&B group named, “Slice.”
D’Marlo has been a part of the music industry for 16 years, however, he was behind the scenes. He is a professional makeup artist and has worked with notable networks such as OWN, BRAVO, WeTV, Lifetime, Bounce, and many more. He’s worked with some incredibly successful artist and actors/actresses such as VaShawn Mitchell, Donald Lawrence, LaShun Pace, Paris Bennett, Latrice Pace, Wendy Raquel Robinson, Teyona Parris, and many others.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
There were definitely some learning curves and obstacles along the way. One of the biggest struggles was fear. Fear is one of the main obstacles that many people face because we’re unaware of the unknown and what that path looks like. To be honest, there were a lot of times, I was manipulated to render services because of the certain status of a client. I was promised jobs and opportunities that would have been a dream come true. But the cost that I would have had to pay was morally a threatening to me; therefore, I declined.
There were many times money was so significantly low and I had NO CLUE what the next day was going to bring. In spite of all troubles, struggles, etc., the one thing that remained constant was my belief in God and understanding that he has never and will never embarrass me.
Please tell us more about your work, what you are currently focused on and most proud of.
I am an independent recording artist and I have a freelance makeup company called Shadow Designs. I released my debut single on May 10, 2019, entitled, “Bring It to Him.” In the world of beauty, I have been a professional makeup artist for 17 years. I have had the opportunity to work with some of the most amazing clients that an artist could ever desire. The consensus is I’m mostly known for my soft, enhancing the application of makeup that compliments all skin types. I’m also known for my mentorship and teaching classes to the everyday woman to the performing arts students. I will say I’m most proud of this journey because it was afforded me the opportunity to save lives, restore confidence, uplift self-esteem, and bring light to self-awareness.
What sets me apart from others is simply the fact that my work has my personal touch, care, compassion, and love in it. I’m also proud to say that my company won the 2015 and 2016 Best of Atlanta Award. My company was chosen Atlanta’s best makeup artistry for 2 consecutive years. This award was given in recognition of marketing success and my contribution back to the community.
So, what’s next? Any big plans?
Musically, I’m excited about sharing my gift with the world globally. In addition, I’m working on my next project which will be a complete album. As far as my artistry, I’m developing workshops and beauty tours to teach principles and theories of makeup application.
