Today we’d like to introduce you to Demoya Boozer.
Demoya, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I have a passion for helping and educating others. I always knew I wanted to do something that involved connecting with people, even though I’m very introverted. That passion and personal experiences led me into the field of social work. I thoroughly enjoy having so many options to help others in this field.
Along with the desire to help others, a large part of my identity is the fact that I am Jamaica. Typically someone will know that shortly after meeting me. My culture and being a Black Woman are things that I celebrate! The blog was an idea I had for a long time but as time went on and I encountered more people in my day to day activities, I felt it was important for me to step out on faith with my idea but have it focus on black people. My blog is a way to connect with people, to share my experiences, failures/losses, as well as motivate others that are in the positions I’ve been in. Having migrated to the United States and having other family members and friends who are also first-generation and second-generation immigrants, I felt it was very important to provide information that students in college, individuals in early to middle adulthood, and even older adults could use to navigate the areas of education and business, and succeed in this phase we call “adulting”. I wanted to include things that I wish I knew when I was a little younger as well.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Nothing about life is smooth. If life were smooth, it would probably be boring, to say the least. I was always a planner and I still am, but in college I realized that the plans I have will not always happen. I knew I wanted to go into the mental health field but I didn’t even understand my own depression at the time. Over the years from college, I would experience a lot of hurts and disappointment, both personally and professionally. I always had an independent mindset and relied heavily on myself and my own resources but I experienced phases of high-functioning depression. I learned a lot to be able to maneuver the difficulties I encountered along the way.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with Melanated Moya – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of and what sets you apart from others.
Melanated Moya is geared towards individuals that are minorities, primarily immigrant or black individuals who are navigating college and adulthood. It’s a space for me to educate, share, and connect with those individuals. It will also feature some business products and a black business directory, which are all coming soon. I am thorough and want to make sure everything is ready when I launch those additional areas of the website.
I am a Social Worker licensed in the State of Georgia, so for me this is about helping others and fostering a therapeutic relationship in the process. Having people to connect with who understand your journey can be a powerful tool. I believe the internet and social media is so saturated with people who are trying to market or sell something to you. I’m not trying to force a product on anyone but I am trying to build genuine connections and hopefully help someone during the process.
So, what’s next? Any big plans?
For my business, I am looking forward to starting individual counseling and taking clients. I encourage everyone to seek therapy. Even therapists have therapists. A healed person is a beautiful person! Also, looking forward to the business products I have coming. They’re so personal and reflect who I am and I can’t wait to share them with everyone.
