Meet Derek Thomas of Marietta

Today we’d like to introduce you to Derek Thomas.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I started my career learning blue-collar trades from my dad, where true quality work and customer satisfaction were the foundation of everything I was taught. That passion slowly but surely led me into the roofing industry here in a fast-moving city.

I learned quickly that the Atlanta market was full of fly-by-night contractors looking to turn jobs and collect checks—often at the expense of product quality, and even more so, customer service.

Through my sales achievements and success, I was pulled into corporate America, where I learned something surprising: the higher I climbed, the better the marketing got… and the worse the service became.

So I got out, and I built a company that refuses to sacrifice quality. That means we’re only the right fit for some clients—and that’s perfect for us. We also make sure our materials are truly reliable, industry-leading, and still affordable.

On top of that, we’ve created a family-like company culture where the number one goal is to make the office feel like home and the employees feel like family—a place where competitive spirit is rewarded and teamwork is honored. Vertical growth is achievable for anyone who joins our team, and expanding from within while maintaining close relationships with our customers is our absolute focus.

We plan to become one of Atlanta’s most trusted roofing companies—and we aren’t going anywhere anytime soon.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Not at all — it hasn’t been a smooth road, and I think anyone who says it was is either lying or they got lucky.

Building something the right way is harder, especially in an industry where a lot of companies cut corners to move fast. I’ve had to fight for the right people, the right standards, and the right reputation — and you don’t get that overnight. There were growing pains, tough lessons, and moments where it would’ve been easy to lower the bar just to scale quicker.

But we stayed disciplined. We focused on quality, customer experience, and building a real team culture — and that’s what’s gotten us here. The struggles didn’t slow us down… they shaped the company and made it stronger.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
We’re best known for not just giving someone their next roof — but their last roof. That’s the standard we build everything around.

On top of that, we specialize in specialty systems most contractors won’t even touch: European metal roofing panels, synthetic luxury products, standing seam metal, cedar shake, slate, and Spanish tile. These aren’t materials you can “figure out as you go” — they take real time, training, and craftsmanship to get right, and we’ve put in the work to master them.

That said, at our roots, we still install the best shingle roofing systems in the city. And we do it in a way almost nobody else does — the details, the build quality, the process, the consistency. We refuse to cut corners, but we also keep it affordable, and we offer financing because we believe great roofing should be accessible.

Bottom line: whether someone wants a high-end luxury roof or a rock-solid shingle system, we have a solution — and we’re built to do it right the first time.

If you had to, what characteristic of yours would you give the most credit to?
I was taught construction trades in New England by some of the most talented craftsmen I’ve ever met — even to this day. And I was shown real perseverance by my dad. He’s walked through battles most people couldn’t imagine, and I never once saw worry on his face.

He taught me two things that I still live by: if all else fails, outwork everybody, and “failure to plan is planning to fail.”

Because of that, I’ve never wanted to be the type of owner who just hires people to handle everything and stays hands-off. I’ve educated myself deeply in every aspect of the business — from the craft to the customer experience to the systems behind the scenes — so I can truly be a personification of the model and standards I believe my company represents.
