Meet Dessa Nue of Nue Entertainment in Downtown

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dessa Nue.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I was born in The Netherlands, also known as Holland. My father was a Singer/Songwriter and Musician and my mother was a stay at home mom. At an early age, me and my Surinamese family moved to Surinam (South America) where I lived for a couple of years before I moved back to my birthplace in the Netherlands. As a teen, I lived between the cities of The Hague, Rotterdam and Amsterdam, also known as” the big 3” (Amsterdam city, Rotterdam city, The Hague city)

My musical journey started at an early age, singing in the school choir and performing in church. My love for music was always in me because I grew in a household where music was always around me. As a teenager, I started listening to different genres of music on the radio. I watched my father going in and out of studio’s recording songs with the greats of our culture. I later started traveling around the big cities in Europe networking with different artists and experiencing different vibes. I was slowly becoming popular in ‘the big 3’, recording and performing in night clubs and big events. I was getting many requests of local artists who wanted to work with me and feat on songs because of my talent.

Bouncing from Amsterdam to Belgium, The UK and Paris, I landed in New York City and I was sold. My passion for Music and Entertainment became even more alive, and as a true dreamer, I felt instantly at home. I remember walking into to Def Jam New York at the time, were I got the chance to sit with an A&R to get better understanding on how the music business works. As I watched a bunch of mixtapes being trashed in a box, I got a chance to absorb information that would be useful later in my career. I was fortunate to be linked in with the Plein family, also known as Eddies Gold Teeth, who became my Surinamese family in the United States. I had the opportunity to network with major artists who used to run in and out the Gold Teeth Shop. At the same time, I was learning about the American culture in Atlanta and New York and how to survive as a young Dutch Surinamese girl in Amerika. As I sat back and watch, I was working on perfecting my Sound and Style of Music.

I was fortunate to meet my current producer ‘Perk’ Atlanta Native who took me under his wings and taught me artist development the American way. We made Nue Entertainment official and started producing and writing records.

With this being Internet era, I did not feel the need of a label push as I have Nue Entertainment and the ability to grow on my own pace and at this point learning the business.

So far, I managed to write for upcoming artists, feat on several underground projects and released a solid single named “Move On”.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
The Music business is not as easy as it seems. It has definitely been challenging and difficult at times. Financially I had to work so much harder to get where I am today. Not having the financial backup, meant that I had to fund my own projects to support my dreams.
