Meet Devin McAllister

Today we’d like to introduce you to Devin McAllister.

Devin, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I was born in Fort Stewart, Georgia but raised in Charlotte, North Carolina. After graduating high school, I attended North Carolina A&T State University. I wasn’t too far from home so after I graduated I moved back to Charlotte. I started to work multiple part-time positions while I was home. After a while of feeling complacent, I decided to enroll in a Masters program at Clark-Atlanta University and also move to Atlanta. I’ve been here about three years now.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Its never been a smooth road and still isn’t necessarily a smooth road. At one point I had a 1.8 GPA in high school. I constantly felt behind. I know that’s insecurity, but it’s true. I also know that’s what has propelled me into spaces I’ve been in. I’m constantly working to be where I think I’m supposed to be. At this point I embrace obstacles and have faith things will fall in place if I handle what I can handle on my end.

We’d love to hear more about what you do.
I’m known for photography in Atlanta. I specialize in portrait photography, but I’m also open to weddings and other forms. I’m most proud of myself for believing in myself and taking a leap of faith and hoping for the best. Owning a camera has honestly changed my life. Its been a vehicle for my happiness and helped me feel like I’m contributing to the world in a more artistic way. I think what sets me apart from others are things like empathy and kindness though. It doesn’t take long to notice that I’m a pretty kind person. I definitely appreciate my parents for instilling that in me. Its definitely helped me maneuver through my obstacles.

What were you like growing up?
Growing up I was pretty quiet. I was the kid in class that knew the answer but just wouldn’t say it. I’m still not too sure why. I loved sports and video games though. You know, the stereotypical boy stuff. I didn’t like to read at all, so it’s ironic I completed a masters in African-American Studies–which literally requires you to read dozens and dozens of books. My father made me and my sister go to the library when we were younger and check out books, so I’m sure that planted the seed. As I grew older, I fell in love with music. Actually, my Instagram and twitter name is a “stage name.” I have one foot in and one out of music as an artist, Mike Lovehall.
