Hi Dewy, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start, maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers.
My name is Dewy Ventura. I am 40 yrs. old. I live in Atlanta, GA. I currently run and Co-produce CholoMMA, a Mixed Martial Arts Entertainment Company, alongside my two partners. We met on a movie set as actors. Now, we teach Brazilian Jiu-jitsu and Superior Street Survival Techniques and offer private lessons to individuals. Jiu-jitsu is growing rapidly as a self-defense and competition sport. We are the only ones in the world teaching Jiu-jitsu in character as Cholos. We are the only ones with a best-selling flannel rashguard bandana, paisley grappling shorts, and Paisley Training Mats. All are available at CholoMMA.com
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
The road has been riddled with potholes, bumps, turns, and twists, but I have remained true to myself and have stayed the course. I’ve had some personal losses, including loved ones. It’s hard when you lose someone dear to you. It’s difficult to continue. Our gym closed for over a month, and we could hardly train. But I’ve also had some Wins, Big ones. We recently opened up a new location in Lawrenceville, GA, and that’s what helps me keep going. Onward and Upwards the show must go on!

CholoMMA is a unique concept that combines the traditional techniques of Brazilian Jiu-jitsu with a comedic spin. Developed by a group of Jiu-jitsu practitioners with a flair for entertainment, CholoMMA aims to inject laughter and lightness into the often intense and serious world of martial arts. Is there something surprising that you feel even people who know you might not know about?
Many people don’t know that I was a troubled youth. That I am an ex-con and have been sober for the last year. I made the decision to join Team Mongoose BJJ and start training Jiu-jitsu and it’s the best thing I ever did. If you have a bad past, don’t let that stop you from chasing your dreams and following your own path. The past doesn’t define us. It’s what we chose to do moving forward that matters.
