Today we’d like to introduce you to Dia Wainwright.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
It all started fall of 2020, I was taking a course in college that was more about discovering the perfect career that would best make each student feel fulfilled. The question was, “if there was anything in the world you could be doing for free and still feel rewarded, what would it be?” I immediately thought I would style people. I’ve always dressed my friends, introduced new hairstyles to them, or written out step-by-step makeup routines. I enjoyed watching them evolve and become more confident from altering their physical appearances. If I enjoyed that feeling from my friends, I knew doing that for many others would give me a constant rewarding feeling. After completing that assignment, my eyes were opened to the fashion industry when I had been studying the sports industry my entire college career. So, in late 2020, I launched my own styling business. I would now capitalize on picking out ensembles for others, personal shopping, consulting on outfits others had picked out, and closet organization. I then became one of the coach’s wife’s assistants. My daily tasks included helping her pack for vacations, picking out her game day ensembles, and capturing/curating her Instagram content. She later introduced me to a celebrity wardrobe stylist I would intern with for the next month. This experience was the ultimate test to see if I wanted to be a wardrobe stylist. Styling then became a side hustle while focusing on finishing my degree in Kinesiology with a concentration in sports management. I graduated in May 2021 and started working for a Sports Marketing Agency promptly. I loved what I did but disagreed with how business transpired behind the scenes. So, I thought, being young and having a little experience in fashion, let’s pivot, and I began working for Saks in January of 2022. While working at Saks, I’ve developed a world-class clientele. I have crossed paths with individuals from all walks of life!
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The most significant obstacle has been fighting the urge to grow or being in my own way. Being a creative there are times when I question my work, or I think others will not receive what made sense to me. Growth is challenging because it’s unknown territory, it’s unfamiliar, and it feels incredibly uncomfortable, but that’s when you know you’re doing it correctly.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’m a style advisor at Saks Fifth Avenue in Atlanta. I specialize in creating unique ensembles. In addition, I create looks and assist in wardrobe building. My imaginative vision sets me apart, the ability to dress others for their body shape and what looks good on them versus following current trends or randomly selecting clothing.
