Today we’d like to introduce you to Dionna Leland.
Dionna, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Faith On Fire Cosmetics was given to me by God in “vision” form in the middle of history class my senior year of high school. I was always known for my eclectic fashion style, loud hair colors, and expressive makeup looks. Because I was known for those things, I was given the name “BeautyGeek” by my peers. So at the time the vision was given to me, Faith On Fire Cosmetics was actually called BeautyGeek Cosmetics. It wasn’t until 2018, God had me change my business name to Faith On Fire Cosmetics. And It was crazy how he gave me the name. I was in the middle of postpartum depression after having my second son, and I was journaling as a form of self-care, and I remember writing in my journal, “God, what is my purpose? I know its more to life than being a mother,” and he gave me a flashback of my cosmetic line that I had been putting off for over eight years because of discouragement. And he said to me, “Write down everything you want to start with for your cosmetic line, and ill provide that for you,” and at the time I was not working, I was a full-time student studying Dental Assisting. And I just remember this great feeling of motivation in my spirit.
So, I did EXACTLY what he told me to. I had ZERO dollars to my name and I literally revised this “list” of products that I wanted to start my business with over and over. and I did that for two months straight. And I kid you not, I checked the mail one and there was a random check for $2,000. And that situation alone fired up my faith. Later that day, I was writing in my journal and God kept saying “Faith On Fire Dionna,” and I was just kinda confused, but he kept repeating it. And then a light bulb went off and it hit me, the name of my business is called Faith On Fire Cosmetics. And he explained to me that my cosmetic line could not live up to its name if he didn’t test my faith. My faith must stay on fire for him at all times. Talk about a word. That day, I knew God had to be in this or it wasn’t going to work. This is my purpose. I just want every woman to feel confident and beautiful at all costs, rather they wear makeup everyday or not. Pro makeup artist or beginner… Faith On Fire Cosmetics provides high-quality products without breaking the bank.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has NEVER EVER been a smooth road for me. Like God told me, “your cosmetic line can not live up to its name if I don’t test your faith.” So any and everything I’ve done concerning my business has never been smooth sailing. I’ve literally had photographers keep my photos from photoshoots I’ve done with them after collaborating with them. I’ve had struggle photoshoots. The lack of support from my city, the feeling of discouragement, I’ve had my share of trouble with marketing and sales, and the list goes on. Nothing comes easy for me and Faith On Fire Cosmetics.
Faith On Fire Cosmetics – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Faith On Fire Cosmetics is a Faith-Based cosmetic line that offers high-quality products for pro makeup artists or beginners. We believe that everyone is an artist of some sort, so when it comes to makeup… We want to encourage women to see themselves as their own muse. And we provide the perfect products for them to create the perfect artistic masterpiece… which are their beautiful faces. I am a pro makeup artist. I’ve been doing makeup for 12 years. So I considered myself well rounded, I’m not really known for a specific makeup style. I express myself through my makeup looks.
I’m most proud of the company growth. It’s been through a lot (in a good way) since it’s launched. And I’m just excited to know what God got for it next. I think what sets us apart is that every product that is formulated, designed, and mailed is with love and mailed with the same excitement she’s going to have when she gets her package. and most importantly, just watching God move. and I say that because we exude love and positivity. We want every woman to feel her best, and to have products that they are interested in, excites us.
What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
The proudest moment so far is when I hosted two events in one weekend. I hosted a Pop-up Shop called “Express Your Faith” Pop Up shop for young entrepreneurs to come set up shop and sell their products & network for two days and I didn’t receive any of the profit. And I hosted a 2-day makeup class called “The Beauty Bootcamp” where I hired two makeup artist from my city to teach one class a piece. A “Natural” glam and a “Glitter” Glam. It was so much fun. and to watch how God moved in those two events was amazing. I had a guest speaker, they had food, and all kinds of things. It was wonderful.
