Today we’d like to introduce you to Dionne Brown.
Dionne, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
How ATL Straight Talk Radio Show, Empowering the People got started was when I was out scouting, or shall I say prospecting for my son a new space for his dealer brokerage business. My dad (James Brown Jr) and I walked into one of the suites located on Old National Hwy. I asked the gentleman sitting at the front desk if the owner was available. He said,” Yes.” The owner came out and introduced himself. I introduced myself and stated, “I am interested in a space here in the office park.” He said that he wasn’t the owner of the office park. I proceeded by asking him what did he do there. He said, “Let me show you around.” We proceeded through the building. He showed me the control room and told me how his daily operation went. Then, I ran into a gentleman named John Sanders; he is the executive aide for State Representative Roger Bruce. I had met John previously at an event at the Douglasville Chamber. He invited me to come on his show. I hesitated, but I accepted the invitation. After visiting his show, I enjoyed it so much that I decided to create my own show because I have always known my gift was helping people. I wanted to motivate, inspire, and empower people in my community. I had an epiphany and thought what better way to motivate, encourage, and empower people in my community.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
In the beginning, everything went well. My team and I had developed a cadence on how we would run the show. Then, in August, I received an email from the studio owner that stated that the team needed to attend a mandatory meeting. We attended the meeting, and at that time, we were told that the studio was shutting its doors in October. The owner wanted to focus on building a school of broadcasting, which would open in February. My team and I decided that we would continue doing the show; however, it was a struggle trying to find a location. We ended up pinning down a location at The Community Kutz, and Kurlz in East Point, Ga, owned by LA Holland. We have since found a beautiful studio located in NW Atlanta.

What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
The moment I spoke into the mic on the first show is when I over came my fear of public speaking. That made me want to continue, and implement the gifts that GOD gave me. I took a communications class in college, but I was afraid of speaking in public even after taking that class. As a result my mom Karen Armstrong supported me, and told me I could do whatever I put my mind to, and I wish I would have done it sooner.
