Today we’d like to introduce you to Brittney Gardner.
Brittney, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I started doing makeup in my early 20’s doing makeup gigs for cosplay’s, proms, and social events. My friends encouraged me to be a makeup artist but I was afraid because I felt I wasn’t going to be successful especially in my hometown of Columbus, GA it was hard to make a decent living even if you have a degree.
My dream was to go to art school in Atlanta and become a character illustrator unfortunately I didn’t have the money or the support I needed so I settled for technical college and got my associate’s degree in health science. Years later after working a lot of dead-end jobs, I finally decided in 2019 to become a makeup artist and have my own business I had to be the artist that I naturally am whatever the form I needed to create and express myself. On January 27th, 2019 I got my certification in the international makeup artist program at glam lab makeup studios in Atlanta from there, I started working with some photographers such as Klowephotography and Jay young photography and slowly building my clientele.
I am also a brand ambassador and creative makeup artist for Flawled&BeYoutiful Cosmetics here in Atlanta the company brands themselves on inspiring and empowering women to be unapologetically the best version of themselves flaws and all while catering to women who are cancer survivors, domestic violence survivors, sexual abuse survivors, and women who are battling with low self esteem I am happy and blessed to not only be a makeup artist but to able to work with wonderful photographers and makeup brands that appreciate me for who I am but also give me a space to be creative artist.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It definitely was some struggles along the way I had to deal with people not taking me seriously, one client I worked with barely wanted to pay me for my work and did send me back the photos from a photoshoot just all types of crazy stuff.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Divine Pearl Makeup Artistry – what should we know?
My company is a freelance makeup artistry I get booked to do makeup for photoshoots, fashion shows, and party events.
I specialize in out the box creative makeup looks.
As a company, I’m most proud of the wonderful relationships of the photographers and clients I work with.
What sets my company apart from the others is that I’m not afraid to do try something outrageous and different, especially special effects or cosplay makeup. I am not afraid to try new things.
Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
I definitely say it’s my determination to my craft I will never stop creating without my strong passion for art I would find life meaningless.
