Meet DJ BOMSHELL BOOGIE Brandi Addison of Atlanta

Today we’d like to introduce you to DJ BOMSHELL BOOGIE Brandi Addison

Hi DJ BOMSHELL BOOGIE, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
As a teenager, I had goals of being a Hip Hop Journalist and a DJ. While attending Loyola University, I made lifetime bonds and began to delve into the DJ scene. I was FASCINATED with the art of turntablism.

In 2007, I gained my first DJ residency, “Bomshelter Thursday” at the now New Orleans’ favorite, The Dragon’s Den. The night was so successful that I began to get hired to DJ at different clubs in the city of New Orleans such as Club Dreams, Ray’s Over the River, Club Metro, opening shows for the House Of Blues Nola and Tipitina’s.

In 2008, I was employed by KKND POWER 102.9 as the afternoon mix show DJ of the Power Mix AT 5 with DJ Bomshell Boogie. After the success of the mix show, I then went on to host my own lifestyle and pop culture news show called The Tea on Sundays. After my tenure at the radio station, I left with the opportunity of traveling across the United States and Canada for 5 years with a national rapper as an opening DJ as well as his show DJ from 2009-2013, appeared as an opener for over hundreds of shows, across the world including the Smokers Club Tour and appeared on 106 & Park.

While touring, I was booked for many events such as NBA All Star Weekend, two performances at the world-renowned New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival.

I now reside in my second home, Atlanta, GA where I continue to spin my vibrant style of hip hop, soul, and rock stages and parties all over the world. I frequently travel to different countries along with many travel groups, concerts and festivals on different stages across the world. I enjoy that my reach is now far beyond the clubs and parties from where I budded.
I have been sought out by corporations and major events including Essence Musical Festival, car and bike shows, MAC Cosmetics, Adidas, The NBA All Star Game, Carol’s Daughter, Lifetime Movie Network, and I’ve DJ’ed many events for reality tv shows as well as in rotation the past 12 years during Atlanta Black Gay Pride Weekend.

This will be my 21st year as a DJ and I can’t but help to think about my journey, I lost my father, my mother was not in my life, I grew up DJing, Djing raised me, made me strong, it made me a fighter made me a competitor, my life has been DJing, school was paid for by DJing, my first time traveling out of the country was from DJ’ing . Djing literally changed the trajectory of my life. I have never had a lover that has ever treated me better than my craft. And for that I am thankful.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The game has changed, everyone with a computer is a DJ messsing up the game. It’s affecting the money that djs make.
Radio is kind of dead and not grossing what it used to so it’s kind of obsolete as a former radio personality.
Also navigating through nightlife there are a lot of things that can distract you, you can not get caught up in the lights.
Also I don’t want to be a cliche but, sometimes you have to say “NO”.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I spin records and I rock parties. I specialize in Old School Hip Hop and R&B and Soul Music. I like to not just spin the music but I love to give a show, tell a story and rock crowds. I play on Turntables as well as a controller or CDJs … My favorite is Turntables nothing beats the feel of the Turntable.

Do you have any advice for those just starting out?
