Meet DJ Dontey of Knight Time Productions in Metro Atlanta

Today we’d like to introduce you to DJ Dontey.

So, before we jump into specific questions, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
My grandfather Harvey Knight was a legendary DJ in Hattiesburg, Mississippi on the radio WJMG 92, and my dad also used to DJ as well back in the day. Growing up watching my grandfather at the radio station and at home really inspired me to get into music. I started playing around with music when I was about six years old. I began to take it seriously around 2010 when I started making mixes for people I knew in school and for teachers and staff as well. When I got to high school, I really kicked it up a notch and began making music, rapping, singing, making beats, engineering, and everything.

I have worked with a large range of artists around Metro Atlanta, including some of the following: B1uan, Wooski, Dusa, V.I.S., Chevii White, Ryan Parker, Ohkcool, Young Ent. Twoin, Rodski, Juice God Larry, Kamoman, Breez, Lf Money Sticktalk Josh, and many more. I got to where I am today by staying consistent to the grind and making connections to artists, producers, and engineers all around the world. Today you can find me djing anywhere around the local area when I am booked. I also produce, engineer, write songs, and make beats as well. DJ Dontey is definitely a name that will be ringing in a lot of ears soon along with my label Knight Time Productions.

Has it been a smooth road?
Anything that you have to start from the ground up is honestly never a smooth road. You have people who doubt you and never believe in you, people who will tell you no when you ask for help, people who will laugh at you for being different and trying things your way. While on the path to get where I am today some of the struggles I’ve had along the way would be not having a lot of support when it comes to my career, a lot of people will never show support but when they see my name pop up somewhere they come out of nowhere. At times when I DJ things may go wrong as far as sound or connection issues but I always find a solution and make sure the crowd is happy along with the venue that I am djing at.

We’d love to hear more about your work.
My label Knight Time Productions was started back in 2012 when I was in high school at the moment it is just me and a few of my family members on board but I work with a lot of different artists and labels as well. Me personally I am a DJ, Songwriter, Recording Artist, Producer, and Engineer. If I pick what I specialize in, it would be Djing and Producing tracks. I am known for my Unique style when it comes to making beats and also how great of a job I do at getting the crowd turned up on the dance floor. I am most proud of my ability to serve all venues and different types of events, and being able to provide professional and efficient service. What I would say sets me apart from others is the fact that I never let anything change me, When I began to make music and DJ, I did it for the love of the craft and music and that is what I still do it for now. I know a lot of people who get into this career just for the money but I am not one of those people, so that is definitely something that makes me different from a lot of people in this profession.

Is our city a good place to do what you do?
I would definitely say that Atlanta is a good place to start any type of music business. I’ve been here all my life and the music scene has definitely grown a lot and I do not see that changing any time soon. I would recommend someone starting out to start out here in Atlanta and just make a good amount of connections throughout the city.
