Today we’d like to introduce you to DJ TAG.
DJ Tag, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
It’s always tricky answering the “Where you are from” question for me because I’m from so many places. I was born in New York to Liberian-Immigrants but grew up in GA for most of my life. So, we’ll just go with Liberian cause that’s what I identify with the most. My African Culture. Music is where it all starts for me. I’ve been doing music pretty much all my life. I play three instruments (Keys, Drums, Trombone), I’ve been a producer since 9th grade of high school, and I’ve currently been Djing since 2012.
Music has lead to everything I’m doing now. I have production credits that include the following artist: Verse Simmonds, Iggy Azalea, Lecrae, St. Beauty, Kiya Lacey, Toye, Tedashii, Victoria Kimani, and Lawdia Just to name a few. (S/O my mentor Ace Harris for the opportunity.)
Djing has opened so many doors for me as well and has allowed me to DJ at some of the best spots and parties in the city. The “Whine Global” and “Smothered and Covered” parties (S/O Werc-Crew), “Get Brunch” (S/O Dibiase, Sean Falyon) A new DJ Residency at Whiskey Blue, and I’ve Dj’ed for 106 live radio, Djiing has also empowered me to create my own events team called “Moves4us” and we host our own Monthly event called “Good Times ATL.”
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It definitely hasn’t been easy. I can say that there has been alot of ups and downs. I think my biggest issue I’ve come across is having to prove my talents and efforts to people. So, trying to get that next record placement or DJ gig hasn’t always been easy to obtain. But I’m thankful for those struggles because it’s in them that I’ve had to prove my talents and efforts to ONE important person. And that’s me. Once I really started believing in the efforts and time, I put into my craft and telling myself that I am great, the opportunities began to open up. I think that everyone should welcome the struggle to get on in this business because it’s in those moments you really start to dig dip within yourself and find out what you’re made of.
Please tell us more about what you do, what you are currently focused on and most proud of.
Well, this is a loaded question, lol. As a DJ and Producer, my specialty comes from my African background. A lot of the beats I produced and even my Dj sets are centered around the Afrobeats/Caribbean music. When I’m producing or Djing those kinds of rhythm and beats, it just puts me in a good feeling. I love those flips of songs you know but with a heavy rhythmic beat to keep people dancing and moving. I use to run away from my niche cause I didn’t want to just be an “African DJ” or “he only makes Afrobeats.” When it’s actually those very things that have opened so many doors from me. I think one thing that really sets me apart with my Djing is that I’m the kind of DJ to get up out the booth and dance with the people and go right back to Djing. I believe in connecting with the people, I’m providing the party too. And what better way to that than to have your DJ Dance with you and go right back to providing you with songs you love? I think that’s cool and it comes from the African in me that loves to dance.
My business is called Move4us and it was founded by me and my friend Jerald Butler last year. We wanted to create a movement in Atlanta that didn’t focus on the bottle service or VIP sections of nightclubs. We wanted to create an event that brought people together through music. To have people from all walks of life come and be exposed to new and old music that would cause them to actually dance all night long. emphasis on dance. And I believe we’ve created that with our monthly event called “Good Times ATL” It’s a space where no matter where you from, or your background you can come and hear great music that will actually make you move. It’s a space where even though our team throws the event, we actually care about the people coming to enjoy the party and that they aren’t just a number. We try our best to spark up convos and get to personally know the people who come to our parties. It’s really something that I and my team (S/O to Dj Brixla, Treaser Brumskine, Zikomo Langston, and Nadia King) do really well. Our biggest party in the Music room in March had over 300 people. It was a great feeling for a party that has only been around since June 2018.
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I don’t believe in luck. I believe in God’s favor and the opportunities he allows to enter my life. As long as I have that, we’re good.
