Today we’d like to introduce you to DJ Toni K.
DJ Toni K, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
The start, well, I always knew that ever since the age of 16 years old that I was not like the rest. I knew that I wanted to go above and beyond the world’s standards. That is when I made the decision to become an entrepreneur and creator. My very first venture was when I created my own swimsuit line, “Bad Girl Swimwear”. From there, I made up my mind that nothing or no one can stop me from living whatever dream I wanted to chase. Since my first venture, I have started multiple businesses showing of my diverse talents. From DJing parties to styling hair, I continue to break barriers every day.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
I would say anything worth having is worth working for and with that being said hard work comes with a price. Some more expensive than others. My journey has not been a smooth ride, but it has been a ride that I would not change. Every struggle has been a lesson and a blessing. One of the biggest struggles that I deal with today is having to turn down international opportunities due to my immigration status. Since I was born in Russia and grew up in Ghana, I am not considered a US citizen yet. Currently, I am working on my citizenship which means I will be able to fulfill my dreams. Not being able to share my many talents with the world feels like I and not living up to my full potential. When there are limits placed on me, I feel like I am in a box that I need to escape from.
What do you do, what do you specialize in, what are you known for, etc. What are you most proud of? What sets you apart from others?
Where do I start! I am more than just an entrepreneur; I am a creator. I always find more ways to create and diversify my talents with the world. I am best known for being a DJ and creating a welcoming party environment for people from all walks of life. While DJing is what I am known for, there are others that know me for being the outgoing hairstylist known as “Scissor Hands”. By day I cut, color and create hair masterpieces and by night I am creating a story through music. I would say the accomplishment that I am most proud of is opening my own hair salon and Djing the halftime show for the Atlanta Hawks. The thing that sets me apart from the masses is the fact that I will never be comfortable with being just okay. There is always something new to learn or to be explored. I am a person that I never satisfied so I am always looking for that next big idea.
If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
While I am so happy with my life, the one thing I would have done a little different is college. I took a couple of classes, but I never finished. So, I would have to say the one thing that I would do different is complete college.
