Today we’d like to introduce you to Dj Yas The Empress (Yas) Jasmine scott
Hi Dj Yas The Empress (Yas) Jasmine, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
From Fostering Dreams to Festival Stages: The Rise of DJ Yas
They call me Yas, and for me, that name isn’t just a moniker – it’s a motto: YOU ARE SPECIAL. My mission? To uplift and heal people through the power of music and dance. It’s a journey that began long before the dazzling lights of Vegas and Atlanta, a journey with its roots firmly planted in the resilience of a young woman raised in Pittsburgh’s foster care system.
As the eldest of three siblings on my mom’s side, and practically one of 20 on my dad’s, life wasn’t easy. The foster care system became our reality, a defining experience that shaped who I am today. But I wasn’t going to let it hold me back. During my senior year of high school, I enlisted in the military, a decision that led me out of foster care and towards a new path. After graduation and basic training, I finally reunited with my father.
2014 marked the official launch of my entertainment career, but not with music. The runway was my first stage, as I graced the platforms of Pittsburgh Fashion Week and collaborated with local brands. Modeling was a stepping stone, leading me down the exciting path of entrepreneurship. Radio, TV, event planning, and management – I wore many hats, each adding a valuable skill to my growing repertoire. Yet, an undeniable pull towards music kept tugging at my heartstrings.
In 2017, I decided to bridge the gap between my creative passions by launching “The Ultimate Power Shoots Events.” This platform brought creatives together, fostering collaboration and generating high-quality content. The success of this venture opened doors in the music industry. Suddenly, I found myself working with giants like Def Jam Records, gaining invaluable experience in radio, music production, and artist management. It was this immersive experience that ultimately led me to the world of DJing and the founding of my own entertainment company, YTE ENT, in 2019.
Then came the turning point. February 2019 saw me introduced to DJ controllers by DJ Good Night. It was a revelation. The world of mixing and creating beats felt like coming home. My natural talent quickly propelled me to become a regular fixture at Pittsburgh’s hottest venues.
But I’m not one to rest on my laurels. My hustle extends beyond the decks. In 2020, I launched the podcast “Yas or Trash,” a platform dedicated to giving up-and-coming artists a voice and exposing their music to a wider audience. The success of the podcast, combined with my ever-growing reputation, landed me a residency and a coveted position in Las Vegas in 2021.
Here, my career truly took flight in Las Vegas , I even was able to acquire my own Radio show on HOT 702.5 FM. The industry giants I once worked for were now collaborators. Brands like Essence Fest and Mielle Organics recognized my talent, and bookings started pouring in from all corners of the world. Today, I find myself in Atlanta, rocking residencies and even spinning sets for Nike’s Well Collective Tour.
Looking ahead, my goals are as ambitious as my spirit , being with a Huge and notable brands like Live Nation, to some of the biggest Festival stages bathed in adoring lights while also touring the globe alongside renowned artists. But my vision extends beyond the glitz and glam. I want to use my platform to champion mental health awareness, a cause close to my heart. Music and dance, I believe, are powerful tools for healing and self-expression.
So, this is me, Yas – the DJ who rose from the challenges of foster care to chase her dreams, one infectious set at a time. Remember, YOU ARE SPECIAL, and just like me, you have the power to achieve anything you set your mind to.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Social media paints a glamorous picture, isn’t it? People see the photos and videos of my life and assume it’s always sunshine and rainbows. While it’s true that I’m mostly living a dream (laugh out loud!), the reality isn’t always smooth sailing.
Moving to new cities is a constant transition. There are moments of doubt, wondering if you made the right choice, and even a longing for the comfort of home. Constantly proving yourself can be exhausting, especially when you face repeated rejection. Building a career in a new market means investing heavily upfront, often with meager returns. Long nights are spent networking, hoping for a breakthrough. You have to adapt to new musical tastes, learn from your mistakes, and be okay with not getting your desired rate every time. These challenges would break most people.
But here’s the thing: I bet on myself. Before leaving my hometown, I knew this wasn’t a walk in the park. I believe my past experiences with adversity and hardship have shaped me into the resilient person I am today. I rely on my faith and the mantra “what’s meant for me won’t pass me by.” Time and time again, this has proven true. Even through the struggles, I know there’s always something amazing waiting around the corner.
Success doesn’t come easy, but by following my intuition and utilizing my talents, I’ve managed to carve my own path. And the best part? This journey is far from over.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
They say a DJ spins tunes, but for me, it’s a symphony of experiences. I’m a curator of moments, weaving together music and energy to create lasting memories. Think of me as your soul doctor, prescribing the perfect musical soundtrack to elevate your mood and ignite your spirit.
My passion goes far deeper than just playing music. I’m invested in the success of every event I touch. I’m a master of vibes, reading the room and directing the energy to create an unforgettable atmosphere. My sonic palette is a vibrant mix – R&B, Afrobeats, Amapiano, Dancehall, Soca, Afro House, Balearic House, and even EDM. It’s all about finding the perfect blend to get people grooving and feeling alive. I also specialize in remixing , producing , and making custom mixes .
But my expertise extends beyond the music. I’m also an event planning aficionado! Themed events with a cause that bring people together hold a special place in my heart.
One of my proudest moments? Leaving Pittsburgh and sticking to it. It’s easy to crave comfort, but the real magic happens when you push past your boundaries. Every gig, every beautiful place, and every connection I’ve made is a testament to my courage and a reminder of the woman I’ve become.
What sets me apart? It’s the passion that burns within me and the genuine care I have for people. Business is important, but true connection comes from being my authentic self – a bridge that connects with people from all walks of life. It’s my love for music, my intuition, and my unique perspective on the world that define me. I’m not just your DJ or event planner; I’m invested in your success, just as I am in my own. My relentless work ethic, fueled by love, is what truly sets me apart.
What has been the most important lesson you’ve learned along your journey?
Know who you are , what is for you, and stay the course .
