Meet Dominique Covington Boseman of Skin Deep in Marietta

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dominique Covington Boseman.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
Skin Deep began in the kitchen of my apartment in Chicago. From a young age, I’ve suffered with eczema, dry skin and sensitive skin. One particularly cold winter in Chicago, my eczema systems were really intense. I tried dozens of skin creams to help my symptoms, and nothing seemed to work. It was so difficult to find products that alleviated my eczema symptoms, that were also natural and plant-based. When I did find natural products, they were either dull and uninspiring or overpriced.

In college, I began making my own natural hair products, so the idea of making a body cream was a natural transition. I was surprised and relieved when I finally created a body cream that helped my eczema symptoms. Once I saw how effective this product was for myself and others I knew that I had created something special. As a former human rights attorney, I turned my passion for helping people into a quest to create beauty products “without sacrifice” for women of all backgrounds and skin types.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
I don’t believe entrepreneurship journey is ever easy or smooth. There are  a myriad of highs and lows along the way. During and after these challenges are always opportunities to gain profound personal and business insight. One challenge was actually getting onto the shelves of Whole Foods Market. We launched in Whole Foods Atlanta stores in April 2019. However in 2017, I submitted my products to Whole Foods, and they decided not to carry the brand at that time. I was so disappointed because having Skin Deep on the shelves at Whole Foods Market had been a goal of mine for so long. So when it didn’t work out, I felt like I’d failed at reaching my goal.

A year later, I re-submitted the brand to Whole Foods, and we had one of the most successful launches for local body care brands in the south region. This taught me to trust the timing of my life. More importantly, it taught me that persistence pays off, and setbacks are only permanent if you give up. It’s a lesson that I have to remember daily, because building and running a business is full of unpredictable wins and losses.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with Skin Deep – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
Skin Deep is a vegan + plant-based body care company. We create a place where healthy, sensible, and luxury merge in the world of beauty. To us, these three ideals form our beauty trifecta. We start with healthy, but it doesn’t end there. Our products are crafted to help women find a true moment of self -care in their busy daily lives.

This means developing products that not only work but work to create a memorable experience. We keep it simple and make it easy for women to create a routine with our products. Also, from the indulgent textures to captivating scents each product is crafted to be a total sensory experience.

Our best-selling Body Soufflé (retailed at Whole Foods Market) is a light, whipped body butter with a velvety, never grainy texture that is a blend of natural shea and botanical oils to deeply moisturize your skin from the inside out.

What I am most proud of is that Skin Deep is uncompromising. We are uncompromising in our approach to effectiveness, transparency, and wellness. Finally, women don’t have to sacrifice their health or budget to look and feel beautiful.

So, what’s next? Any big plans?
