Today we’d like to introduce you to Dominique Nicole.
Dominique Nicole is the owner of D.Nicole Couture. She is a self-taught designer who specializes in Formal Wear for ALL SIZES. Dominique has always been a creative, but she has only been sewing professionally for seven years.
Dominique grew up as a “military brat”, moving to several states before arriving in Atlanta in 1998. She graduated from Mt. Zion High School in Jonesboro, Georgia and later went on to graduate Cum Laude from Spelman College with a degree in Biology and from the Medical College of Georgia with a Master’s in Public Health. Dominique went on to work in the Public Health field for a few years.
Dominique’s fate changed one day when she took a sewing class from a local seamstress. After that class, she began sewing for herself until she started to get commissioned by friends. Not long after this, Dominique started to get referrals and her business took off. Dominique ran D.Nicole Couture as a side business for about four years until the company that she was contracting for started to go under and cut contracts. She had to decide between commuting 80 miles a day as a full-time employee or to fly solo and pursue her ambitions; she chose the latter. Although it has not been an easy road, Dominique has been building her business one brick at a time and she is dedicated to helping others along the way.
Has it been a smooth road?
It has not been easy operating as the designer, marketer, and seamstress all in one. I do everything myself which can sometimes be quite overwhelming. However, I do have my mom who operates as my Business manager and “unpaid personal assistant” to help me on the business side and keep me on track. I really do not know what I would do without her help. And my clients LOVE her!
As a designer, I struggled with positioning myself in the Atlanta market. I don’t have thousands of followers on Instagram, but I have been able to make genuine and meaningful connections with my clients who are my largest “evangelists”. Word of mouth clientele is very big for me, and I get a lot of referrals this way.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with D. Nicole Couture – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of and what sets you apart from others.
I specialize in Formal Wear and Special Occasion outfits for Prom, Bridal, Milestone birthdays, Photoshoots, Baby Showers, etc. I am known for well-made dresses and gowns for standard and plus size women.
There are a few things that sets me apart from other designers; One being that I have the ability to make women of any size look amazing. I do not discriminate based on size. I can design and make a gown for a woman who is a size 20 just as well as I can for a woman who is a size 2. I am also very approachable and easy to work with. I find that many women are very nervous and apprehensive when they initially come in for fittings and consultations, but I always find a way to chip away at those barriers. Many of my clients have been with me for so long that they have actually become dear friends of mine!
I am most proud of my Company’s commitment to our clients. I truly believe that I attract the most delightful clients because we operate from a place of love. I know that may sound odd but it’s true. I make every single gown as if I am making it for my best friend, and I genuinely enjoy working with all of my clients, especially my prom girls because they are so sweet and fun!
Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
I love Atlanta because I feel like it’s a city where anyone can make it! The Atlanta Arts scene is definitely bustling right now, and I am so happy to be a part of it. I also love the fact that I can find other artists, photographers, etc. to collaborate with at any given time. I love it!!!
What I like least about the city? TRAFFIC! I wish we had a more comprehensive rail system that stretched through the North, South, East and West Suburbs.
