Meet Dori Humphrey

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dori Humphrey.

Hi Dori, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
As a kid living with a hairstylist, you are bound to pick up techniques and skills that you may not think are valuable until you’re older… Well at least that was my story. I first learned how to braid hair from my mom, who happens to be a Hairstylist that always said “one of my children will follow in my shoes”, but I never thought it would be me. Yeah, I did start building a clientele at 13, but it wasn’t anything I wanted to take seriously, I just liked making money. As the years passed by, I continued to do hair on the side while I also worked full-time as a College graduated. I finally decided to get my Cosmetology License because I wanted to ensure that I had something to fall back on if I needed a job somewhere away from home. While in Cosmetology School, I worked at Chick-fil-A as the General Manager and continued to gain clients doing hair. I thought that I would eventually own a franchise within the company, but I also started to fall in love with hair and how women gained their confidence back after sitting in my chair. It was at that point where the thought of being a restaurant franchisee owner changed to me becoming a business owner, a Salon Owner. I obtained my License and continued to build enough revenue to invest in myself, and after eight years I had finally given up on the chicken shack and began to focus on what I was passionate about which was serving others. I took the serving mindset to treat everyone with Honor, Dignity, and Respect and instilled that in my brand with offering a Lavished Experience, and the skill of making a person gain a confidence in themselves by doing their hair borderline making them feel Konceited and created the salon name of Lavished & Konceited.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I will say being a Business owner is not easy by any means. There is not anyone encouraging you to keep going like a manager would do to you, the checks are not guaranteed like they are when you’re on someone else’s payroll, and there is literally a change in how you have to make things happen… You really have to grind!! You are your own marketing team, your own accountant, and your own researcher… so being “The Boss” it is not for everyone, and that’s ok. Sometimes I have wanted to give up and go back to what was comfortable, but the fact that I am doing something that I love is what has made me push so hard to make it. I am able to focus on what it is that I want to do and still have time to being a wife and mom. One thing that I have noticed is that people have a tendency to only want to help themselves, so if you don’t know the right people, you won’t get much help, but when you have faith and a vision, you will always be led to where you need to be at the right time.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
