Meet Doug Grimmett of Primal Screen in Old Fourth Ward

Today we’d like to introduce you to Doug Grimmett.

Douglass Grimmett is the founder of Primal Screen, a digital design firm based in Atlanta, and leads a full-time staff of 30. Started in 1995, Primal Screen creates engaging and strategic content for multiple platforms including film, television, gaming, interactive, mobile and environmental media.

Grimmett is the creative force behind Primal Screen projects including: redesign of Cartoon Network, launching Boomerang, launching Animania (the world’s first high definition animation network), relaunching Nick Jr., launching Sprout, designing a new on-air look for Spike TV, and rebranding PBS Kids in 2006, 2014 and PBS Kids Go in 2009. Grimmett is President Emeritus of AIGA Atlanta, an AIGA Fellow and on the board of directors of MODA (Museum of DesignAtlanta). He currently teaches Graphic Design History at Georgia State University.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The past 20 years has been a time of incredible change in the way we are all connected and interact with media. And we’re going to see a lot more chaos going forward. So it’s not a smooth road at all as we navigate the upheavals turning our industry on its head. But it’s been an exhilarating experience and we managed to thrive. As old platforms contract, new ones open up new opportunities.

Primal Screen – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
We specialize in engaging children with great stories to entertain but also teach. We have the capacity, all in house, to develop complex campaigns, episodic series, and branding systems. We create 2D and 3D animation, and interactive games and apps. All work is performed by teams on staff, including live action video, and music and sound design.

I’m most proud of our work that informs and delights people. We can actually have a positive impact on the world.

What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
Our long relationship with PBS Kids since their launch in 1999. I was proud of the most recent redesign of the network because it was the 6th time we created a comprehensive branding system for them. Plus, I love the results. PBS is a great company.
