Today we’d like to introduce you to Dr. Jada Moore-Ruffin, MD.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I’ve always believed I was put on this earth to serve. In my junior year of high school, I helped to care for a neighbor who was diagnosed with breast cancer at the age of 35. Her daughter and I became friends and each time I would visit their house, I found myself spending more time with her mother trying my best to help her feel better after chemo and encourage her to eat despite her loss of appetite or severe nausea. I knew then that I wanted to become a doctor.
Fast forward over two decades past college, medical school, residency, health policy and leadership fellowship, integrative nutrition health coach certification, two medical board certifications years of caring for patients in 3 states and many different settings, where I am today has been a part of a long journey. And this trek of the journey is just beginning.
A few years ago, I decided to focus my next career path on addressing the silent epidemic of obesity and treating patients with weight problems and problems related to weight. That decision led me to pursue a long time dream of opening a weight loss and wellness center that would take a medical, physiological and scientific approach to weight loss success. This approach takes into account individual physical makeup and other health conditions that contribute to and are worsened by excess weight. Of course, the other aspects of lifestyle, emotional and mental health, eating disorders and many other factors are assessed and targeted as well.
Being a Physician, An Entrepreneur, A Female, A Wife, A Mom and wearing many other hats can be challenging. I think that’s what my patients like most about the REAL Weight Loss + Wellness team of experts. We understand how life comes at you and we meet you wherever you are to guide you to where you want to be.
Building a successful business around quality services, strong relationships and consistent results takes strategy and skill. We are always working to improve our model at REAL. Always! And our patients, believe it or not, become our biggest motivation.
Growth is a big part of my life plan. People who are close to me know I’m always up to something else, something new, something big, just plain ole always up to something! I’m naturally an inquisitive person and lifelong learner. I firmly believe we are born with many gifts and talents, some we know of already and some that are yet to be discovered. It’s my goal to tap into everything God has prepared, equipped and purposed me to do, even the unfamiliar and tough stuff.
What’s next on the horizon? Something new, something big, something! I am working on a book (still), expanding my coaching and consulting platforms, an online course and a couple of other business ventures. Personally, I’m enjoying my family and planning some travel time as we prepare ourselves for empty nesting.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Heck No it has not been a smooth road! The road to success is paved with potholes, hills, valleys, dark roads, blinding bright lights, and many other distractions and or disruptions. If it isn’t, I’m probably not living big enough. People seem to think. Doctors have it all AND have it all together. Despite what may be depicted on popular television, Doctors are human and experience struggles just like everyone else. Myself included. There were times that I’ve been without health insurance, had to decide between gas and food, and felt like all I had worked for had been lost. Yet, in the words of the legendary poet and activist, Dr. Maya Angelou, “Still I Rise”. I’m grateful for my journey, yes, all the ups and downs. It’s made me who I am today. Faithful, Resilient, Determined.

This approach takes into account individual physical makeup and other health conditions that contribute to and are worsened by excess weight. Of course, the other aspects of lifestyle, emotional and mental health, eating disorders and many other factors are assessed and targeted as well. By assessing things like hormones, immune system, DNA testing, food sensitivities and more, we can detect problems that make losing weight more difficult and issues that contribute to abnormal weight gain. We then customize weight loss strategies for the individual based during this investigative process. Our typical client base includes men and women of all ages and children ages 13 and older.
Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
One of my favorite childhood memories was playing in my grandmother’s backyard, making mud pies and serving tea to my stuffed animals. The imagination and freedom I felt then is a state of being I still strive to capture as an adult.
