Meet Dr. Joe Demyen of Demyen Family Chiropractic

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dr. Joe Demyen.

Dr. Demyen, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
You could say that health and fitness has always been part of my DNA. I have played sports my entire life. I started personal training immediately after high school. I was introduced to chiropractic during my teens. Following the graduation of college, I was looking into furthering my education in the healthcare field. Chiropractic fit my philosophy. Providing options to allow people to optimize their health was what I was looking for. I entered chiropractic school with the intent to learn everything I could in order to best serve the population.

I earned the clinical excellency award upon graduation. This quest to improve my knowledge and skill set I spent another year study sports performance, injuries and extremity management. I found that I still wanted to be better. I was introduced to Functional neurology and went on to earn a Diplomate in Chiropractic Neurology. This endeavor led me also to study Functional Medicine, which is a nutritional way of addressing metabolic problems.

Has it been a smooth road?
No endeavor is truly smooth. All of this knowledge has to be translated into a language the general population can grasp. Re-positioning people to hear something different regarding their health issues is a challenge. The general population has been trained to believe that pills are the answer.

Teaching that lifestyle changes will go a long way to improve the majority of their complaints can be daunting. It has been my experience that most people don’t have a lot of problems, they have a lot of symptoms based on a few problems. Helping them grasp this concept and get them to be an active participant is the goal.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Demyen Family Chiropractic story. Tell us more about the business.
Demyen Family Chiropractic is a chiropractic office that sees all types of individuals. We see kids, the elderly, athletes and everyone in between. We also specialize in vestibular disorders (balance issues), traumatic brain injuries, neurologic conditions and metabolic disorders.

What sets us apart is the vast experience and education in diagnosing and developing a care plan to allow patients to regain their lives. We have been so successful in this that we receive numerous referrals from medical neurologists, neurosurgeons, physical therapists, occupational therapists and even referrals from cardiologists. This makes all of the hours of education and volunteering in brain centers worth it. When the results of our work spread within the healthcare community it broadens the understanding of conservative focused treatment.

The second thing I am very proud of is our work with Special Olympic athletes. These athletes are dedicated not just their sport but the treatment plans set up for them. Many of these athletes have won medals for the first time since the onset of their treatment protocols. this proves that if you do something right enough, long enough, the end results are predictable.

Where do you see your industry going over the next 5-10 years?  Any big shifts, changes, trends, etc?
I see the change happening already. 10-15 years from now the Functional Neurology approach will be more commonplace. Combining the adjustment with neurologic sensory integration has dramatically improved patient outcomes and that it is not just about back and neck pain This is a great thing because too many people are suffering needlessly and feeling hopeless. The opioid crisis is a prime example of this.
