Today we’d like to introduce you to Dr. Jorge De Jesus.
Hi Dr. Jorge, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
My journey into chiropractic care is deeply personal and shaped by both adversity and inspiration.
I was born hearing, but within my first month of life there was a medical malpractice at the hospital where I received an overdose of antibiotics that damaged my auditory nerves. My mother didn’t realize something was wrong until I was about three years old. One day she was visiting my aunt when something heavy fell on the floor and made a loud noise that startled everyone in the room — except me. That moment raised concern, and after several audiology tests doctors confirmed that I was profoundly deaf.
From there, my life changed. I began wearing hearing aids and also spent the next 15 years in speech therapy, learning how to communicate and navigate a world that was not designed for someone with hearing loss. When I was twelve years old, I underwent cochlear implant surgery at the University of Miami. That procedure changed my life. Today, thanks to the cochlear implant, I am able to hear about 90%.
But hearing loss was only one part of the journey. Growing up, I faced many daily challenges — bullying, discrimination, being misunderstood, and people sometimes taking advantage of my disability. There were many moments in my life when I felt judged or underestimated. If life knocked me down a thousand times, I had to learn to stand up a thousand and one times.
Even today, I believe my life story is one of resilience. There were many moments when I wanted to give up, but there is a motto in my family that has always guided me: “We never give up, even when life presents a challenge.” That mindset has carried me through some of the most difficult moments in my life.
Medicine has always been part of my world. I grew up surrounded by healthcare. My father, Miguel, is a general surgeon, and my mother, Gladys, worked as a nutritionist before later transitioning into pharmaceutical medical representation. Because of that environment, I always knew I wanted to become a doctor. At one point I thought I would become a dentist, and although I have tremendous respect for surgeons—especially my father—I knew surgery was not the path for me.
Eventually I discovered chiropractic, and everything clicked. I realized chiropractic care allows me to help people in a hands-on and natural way that can truly improve their quality of life. That purpose resonated deeply with me.
I graduated from Life University in 2020 and have now been practicing chiropractic for over five years. Opening my clinic, The Healing Spine Chiropractic in Atlanta has been one of the most meaningful milestones of my life.
My journey has not been easy, and in many ways it still isn’t. Every day comes with challenges. But no matter what, I choose to show up, to be present, and to continue moving forward—even on the days when it’s difficult.
From the time I was a baby until today, I am who I am because of my family. My parents, Gladys and Miguel, shaped my character and resilience. I also have two siblings, my brother Miguel and my sister Fabiola, who have always been part of my support system. And since I met my wife, Stephanie, she has become one of the greatest sources of strength and motivation in my life. Together, my family is the engine that keeps me moving forward.
As someone who has personally faced physical and life challenges growing up, I feel a deep connection with my patients. I understand what it means to struggle with your health and to search for solutions that truly improve your life. That perspective shapes the way I care for every patient who walks through my doors.
For me, chiropractic isn’t just a profession. It’s a calling — and a way to give back by helping others heal, move better, and live fuller lives.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It definitely has not been a smooth road. My life has been full of challenges, both personally and professionally.
One of the earliest challenges was growing up with profound hearing loss. After a medical malpractice in infancy damaged my auditory nerves, I spent much of my childhood adapting to a world that was not designed for someone with hearing impairment. I wore hearing aids and spent about 15 years in speech therapy learning how to communicate effectively. Later, receiving a cochlear implant at the University of Miami helped tremendously, but the journey still required constant perseverance.
Growing up, I also faced bullying, discrimination, and people underestimating my abilities because of my disability. Those experiences were difficult, but they also shaped my resilience and determination to prove to myself—and to others—that limitations do not define who we can become.
Professionally, the journey had its own obstacles. I graduated from Life University in 2020, right as the world was facing the COVID-19 pandemic. Starting a career in healthcare during such an uncertain time created many challenges and delays. Like many entrepreneurs, building a practice from the ground up has required patience, sacrifice, and a lot of faith.
Opening my clinic and establishing myself in a new community has been another learning experience. Starting a business always comes with risks, financial pressure, and moments of uncertainty. There are many days where things are not easy, but I’ve learned that perseverance is part of the process.
Despite all of these challenges, I believe they have shaped who I am today. Every obstacle has strengthened my character and reinforced my commitment to helping others. Those experiences allow me to connect deeply with my patients because I understand what it means to face adversity and continue moving forward.
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about The Healing Spine?
I am the founder and chiropractor at The Healing Spine Chiropractic, a modern chiropractic clinic located in Buckhead in Atlanta. My goal is simple: to help people move better, feel better, and improve their quality of life through safe, evidence-based chiropractic care.
At The Healing Spine, we focus on treating the root cause of musculoskeletal problems rather than simply masking symptoms. Many of our patients come to us with conditions such as neck pain, back pain, sciatica, disc issues, headaches, sports injuries, and injuries from car accidents. We take a comprehensive and personalized approach to care, which can include chiropractic adjustments, spinal decompression therapy, soft tissue therapies, rehabilitation strategies, and advanced therapeutic modalities.
One of the things that sets our clinic apart is the level of attention and personalized care each patient receives. As a smaller, patient-focused practice, I take the time to truly listen to each patient’s story, evaluate their condition carefully, and develop a customized care plan that fits their specific needs and goals.
Another important part of our practice is accessibility and communication. As a doctor who is deaf and uses a cochlear implant, I understand firsthand that communication in healthcare can sometimes be challenging. Because of this experience, I strive to create a welcoming and inclusive environment where patients feel heard, respected, and understood.
Brand-wise, I am most proud of building a clinic centered on trust, compassion, and genuine care for patients. My goal has never been just to run a business, but to build a place where people feel confident that someone truly cares about their health and recovery.
Ultimately, I want readers to know that chiropractic care can be a powerful and natural way to improve health and function. My mission at The Healing Spine is to help people return to the activities they love, live with less pain, and feel empowered about their health.
What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
One of the things I appreciate most about Atlanta is its diversity and energy. It’s a city full of opportunity, culture, and people from many different backgrounds. That diversity creates a strong sense of community and makes it a great place for small businesses and entrepreneurs to grow. I also appreciate how Atlanta continues to develop while still maintaining its unique character and neighborhoods, like Buckhead where my clinic is located.
Another thing I value about this city is its vibrant Hispanic community. Being fluent in both English and Spanish allows me to connect with and serve patients who sometimes feel more comfortable communicating in their native language. It’s very meaningful to me to be able to help bridge that gap and provide care to people who may otherwise struggle to find healthcare providers they can easily communicate with.
I also enjoy the balance Atlanta offers between a major metropolitan environment and access to nature, parks, and outdoor activities. It encourages people to stay active and maintain a healthier lifestyle, which aligns well with my mission as a healthcare provider focused on movement and wellness.
If I had to mention one challenge, it would probably be the traffic. Like many large and growing cities, getting around Atlanta can sometimes take longer than expected. However, that growth is also a sign of how vibrant and attractive the city has become for people and businesses.
Overall, Atlanta is an incredible place to live and work, and I feel grateful to be part of this community and to serve the people here.
