Dr Kanchan Chhabria

Hi Dr. Chhabria, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I started my career as a dentist after completing my BDS in my home country, India. I truly enjoyed helping patients and making a difference in their lives, but deep down, I always lived in a world of my own imagination. After practicing dentistry for a year, I finally decided to pursue my true passion: creativity. I embarked on a new journey and earned my undergraduate degree in product design from Milano. Working at a small studio, I delved deep into the essence of Italian design, learning its intricacies. While designing products was fulfilling, what truly captivated me was the art of storytelling. Understanding the emotional connection people have with products and learning how to narrate these stories to our audience fascinated me. It was then that I decided to pursue my M.A. in Advertising. Now, as I near the end of my course, I can confidently say that I’ve found where I truly belong. Crafting stories and working for causes that matter have always been my strengths, and I’m excited to turn them into my profession.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It definitely has not been a smooth road. For me, it was a change in industries. Being a dentist and a creative professional have been two completely different paths. Coming from a medical background, I was conditioned to follow the book. And all of a sudden, in the creative world, I was making new rules and creating things. The transition was challenging for me. Aside from that, finding my place in the industry among such talented creatives has been something I believe we all struggle with.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
As a product designer trained in Milan, I have honed my skills at creating minimalist designs that solve a problem with attention to intricate details. My experience in a Milanese design studio provided me with valuable insights into the internal workings of Italian design. Along with mastering 3D modeling and design, I explored conceptualization and empathy-driven ideas, particularly those focused on sustainability.

My expertise in empathy and storytelling was recognized when I became a finalist in the Roplastic competition.

My master’s degree in advertising helped me. Harness the power of storytelling. I firmly believe that storytelling is the key to connecting with people, and I am passionate about using this skill to reach a wider audience.

And I believe that my multicultural experience and educational background set me apart. Each place I have lived has taught me invaluable lessons, which I still carry with me today. And they combine to form the person I am today, which I consider to be the best version of myself.

Are there any apps, books, podcasts, blogs, or other resources you think our readers should check out?
Rhonda Byrne’s The Secret must have helped me stay focused on the task at hand. I am not really into podcasts yet, but I am looking forward to exploring them.
