Today we’d like to introduce you to Dr. Kojo Sarfo.
Dr. Sarfo, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
My name is Dr. Kojo Sarfo, DNP and I’m an author/entrepreneur/forensic mental health nurse practitioner in Williamsburg, Virginia. In 2015, I took a job at a psychiatric hospital in Augusta, GA and that inspired me to become a mental health advocate and professional. I began pursuing my doctorate in nursing practice (w/ a mental health focus) in 2016 and eventually graduated from Augusta University in 2019. While I was in school, I started a clothing company with my friends in Atlanta and named it Abrantie & Signora (A&S), which translates to “Gentleman” and “Lady” in the Ghanaian and Italian languages. We used the clothing company to promote positivity for people of all backgrounds.
We then acquired a partnership with Mental Health America (MHA) – which is the nation’s leading non-profit that focuses on promoting the mental wellness of all Americans. Since then, we have attended many conferences hosted by MHA in Washington, D.C. and have promoted our company on different college campuses in Georgia. Now, we have a steady presence at Kennesaw State University where one of the co-founders, Mike Boateng, attends school. After graduating from Augusta University, I published my first book on Amazon which is entitled “You Already Won”. I then relocated to Virginia, where I currently work as a board-certified forensic psychiatric mental-health nurse practitioner. In addition to my current practice, I continue to promote mental health awareness on social media platforms such as Tik Tok and Instagram.
Has it been a smooth road?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road to getting to where I am today. Along the way, I had to balance my schedule as a graduate student and a registered nurse working long hours at the hospital to help make ends meet. Additionally, pursuing my entrepreneurial passions cut into my free time and sleep and sometimes made me more irritable than I usually would be.
One specific struggle I had was time management — which has always been an issue for me. While pursuing my doctorate, I was diagnosed with ADHD and had to lean on family and friends to figure out a way to slow things down and organize my priorities. However, these challenges have been the very things that inspire me to continue to be the best person for my family and friends and the best clinician that I can be for my patients.
Alright – so let’s talk business. What else should we know about you and your career so far?
Though I have a clothing company, my personal brand business revolves around creating informational and educational content for aspiring nurses, healthcare professionals, and mental health clinicians. I have a YouTube channel where I answer questions as it relates to my nursing career and I also make vlogs to take people throughout what my days look like at times. I also provide general mental health tips, through my relationship with Mental Health America, on Tik Tok and Instagram.
I’m proud of my personal brand because I am able to share my most authentic story and inspire people. And outside of selling my book, “You Already Won”, on Amazon, I don’t monetize my audience. My goal is to produce content at scale to help out the most amount of people in an efficient way. The thing that sets me apart from other influencers with a personal brand is that I have my own texting community (1-678-212-551) which I used to send educational and motivational updates to my supporters. Additionally, there is also a chance for one on one engagement through my texting community and I’m able to directly answer many questions that people tend to have.
Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
I love the fact that Atlanta is as many people say “one hour from Atlanta”. The Metro ATL area is comprised of so many different areas – from Marietta to Alpharetta to midtown ATL – and each town has their own vibe. This means that there’s a part of Atlanta for everyone to enjoy.
My least favorite thing about the city is the traffic. I want no parts of it at any time. lol
