Meet Dr. Lauren Powell

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dr. Lauren Powell.

Dr. Lauren W. Powell, MD, “The Culinary Doctor,” is a board-certified family medicine physician and culinary medicine specialist on a mission to end generational health issues in the African-American community. She makes healthy eating accessible and enjoyable for all through her social media quick tips, online cooking school, and debut book, “Food Essentials for the Busy Professional.”

Born and raised in Metro-Detroit, Dr. Lauren graduated cum laude from the undergraduate program at the University of Detroit Mercy and went on to obtain her Doctor of Medicine degree from the Wayne State University School of Medicine. Around this time, her father endured a health scare, which prompted her to shift her doctoral focus to culinary medicine. Subsequently, Dr. Lauren sought further training in nutrition and culinary art.

Nowadays, Dr. Lauren travels the U.S. speaking to diverse audiences about disease prevention and the healing properties in food. She is a mainstream and social media personality that has been featured on Sister Circle Live, Fox 2 News Detroit, as well as on The DoctorGoals Podcast and the Melan-In-White Coats Podcast. Dr. Lauren is also the co-founder of Young Lady Watching, a not-for-profit organization purposed to empower and encourage young minority females to pursue careers in healthcare.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
My path to medicine has not be linear. Getting into medical school was challenging for me. And as a physician, stepping out of the box to have a nontraditional approach to health has also been a challenge. Challenges have taught me to trust the process.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Dr. Lauren, The Culinary Doctor story. Tell us more about the business.
I am a board-certified family medicine physician. But I am also known as the culinary doctor, and that is because I teach individuals how to use food in order to prevent and cure disease. I do this through my Amazon best selling book, live speaking events with cooking demo, and through my online cooking school. My goal is to meet individuals at whatever stage they’re at on their health journey and end generational patterns of food-related diseases.

What I most enjoy are live events. It’s powerful to cook with the individuals and show them how easy it is to cook delicious and healthy meals.

Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I don’t believe in luck. I believe in purpose. What God has for you, is for you. My prayer always is that I’m staying in the will of God and that my life brings Him glory. When failure happens, I believe it occurs to teach us something that we would not have learned had it not been for that failure. So I choose to focus on the lesson and not the shortcoming.
