Meet Dr. Magen Henry of The Well Chiropractic in Sandy Springs

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dr. Magen Henry.

Dr. Henry, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Chiropractic is not a common career choice amongst African Americans. I get asked all the time what made me choose chiropractic. In fact, the entire first year of chiropractic school that question was asked as an ice breaker in every class. For many of my classmates, the answer was always some miracle story about how chiropractic saved their life, or their parent’s life, or their pets or a chiropractic legacy story. For the black students, our answer was usually that we had no idea about chiropractic until a recruiter from the school introduced us to it. Most of us had never had a chiropractic adjustment prior to attending school and we weren’t exactly sure what we were getting into. I knew, however, whatever chiropractic was, I wanted a part of it.

I fell in love with chiropractic because it honors the body. Unlike traditional medicine, chiropractic doesn’t put anything into the body, as in medications. Nor does chiropractic remove anything from the body, as in surgery. Chiropractors understand that the wisdom in the body is infinitely greater than any medicine, it just needs no interference. Chiropractic looks for the root cause, the interference, that is hindering your body from expressing optimal health. Through the adjustment, we remove interference to the nervous system that controls all bodily processes. Thus, your body is able to function well and your symptoms alleviate.

I opened The Well Chiropractic in January 2019, with the goal of expanding chiropractic in the African American community, specifically African American women whose voices are not heard loudly enough in the health care arena. I am dedicated to transforming the health of my community through specific chiropractic adjustments designed to maximize the functioning of the body. It’s about more than back pain.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
If the road was smooth, there would be no growth and I have grown, grown in this process.

It had always been a goal to open my own office within six months following my graduation from chiropractic school. I had no real plan on how I would execute this, but the thought stayed with me my entire matriculation through school. When it got closer to the graduation, I decided that I would work as an associate chiropractor in another chiropractor’s office to save some money, and truthfully, to have some time to live a little before I got into the nitty-gritty of running my own office. God had other plans, however. With certainty, I sent my resumè to over 20 chiropractic offices and had about 10 different interviews. Each one felt like a “sure thing,” but in the end, each had their own reason for not working out. One interviewer even told me that I would hate it if I worked in his office. I felt defeated. I cried. I argued with my boyfriend. Then, I cleared my face, apologized, and bossed-up. Instead of sending out more resumès, I found a small space for rent adjoining a pilates studio, filed for an LLC, started The Well Chiropractic and began seeing patients in my own office six months after my graduation.
Starting my business, by myself, from scratch and with very little money presented all the typical challenges that every entrepreneur faces, so I won’t dwell on them. I have been blessed with amazing support who has been there with every step. So, yes, the struggle has been real, but so is God.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into The Well Chiropractic story. Tell us more about it.
The Well Chiropractic facilitates healing through the delivery of specific chiropractic adjustments for the entire family, from newborn to old age. (Yes, newborns can get adjusted! No, it’s not what you think.) By certification, I specialize in pediatric and perinatal chiropractic, but my real specialty lies in my ability to get my practice members to recognize the innate wisdom in their bodies and releasing ‘the well’ within them. What makes me most proud of is that The Well has served as a catalyst for many of my practice members to take charge and transform their overall health. I believe what sets The Well apart from other chiropractic offices is my belief that practice members should be active partners in making decisions about their health and not simply being told what to do. No one knows your body, life situations, goals and priorities better than you. I honor that by being your partner in health, not the authority on your health.

Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I don’t believe in luck. I believe in God. I know that everything that has happened, or didn’t happen, in my life brought me here. I know that every failure I thought I had has always resulted in something better. I try to remember that everything always works out, because when hasn’t it?
