Today we’d like to introduce you to Dr. Michael A. Thomas, Jr.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
Since I was 12, my goal was to be a doctor. I had no idea what type of doctor, but I knew I wanted to be a doctor. I had a cousin that finished dental school in the early 2000s and my parents would take us to his office and he was the first black doctor that I’d ever seen (Dr. Fionn Thomas).
From then on I became interested in dentistry. In high school, I was in a class called health occupation and it allowed students to shadow various healthcare providers in the county. I visited several offices, but when I went to Dr. Curtis Pickard’s office, I fell in love with dentistry.
I’ve always wanted my own dental practice. It has always been a dream of mine. I feel that I can help more people that way. I have been involved in dentistry since I was 16. I worked at a dental office as a teenager after school. What I remember most about working as a teenager was how appreciative patients were of my mentor Dr. Curtis Pickard. And that really made a great impact on me.
My practice launched in November of 2018 with months and months of planning. I actually purchased an existing office. However, the office had no patients. So it was basically a start-up dental office. So we’ve had success thus far by providing optimal oral healthcare and creating an atmosphere that encourages people to like coming to the dentist.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
There have been peaks and valleys. Those peaks include 5-star Google reviews, seeing patients smile and enjoy coming to our office.
The valleys are sometimes you get tired. Not of dentistry or patients, but the business of dentistry. The business of dentistry is a completely exhausting entity in itself; however, the rewards from doing it correctly are immense and irreplaceable.
