Today we’d like to introduce you to Dr. Michelle Oz.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
From a very early age, I knew I wanted to be a doctor. Like most kids, I thought I wanted to be a pediatrician. As I grew up, playing sports and being active, I leaned more towards something sports related. I went to Michigan State University with every intention of going to Medical School. During my course of study, I learned a great deal about the body and its ability to self-heal. I became really interested in the mechanics of injury and how it related to sports. While at Michigan State, I shadowed several different doctors and what resonated the most was what I had learned from a chiropractor. I wasn’t all that familiar with chiropractic at the time, but my grandmother, now 91, swore by it. I actually followed her into an appointment and watched the relationship she had with her chiropractor. She told me how she trusts him with anything and that he’s been able to help her overcome a lot of life’s obstacles. After that, I started looking at my options and reached out to a friend and asked her about chiropractic school. She made it sound incredible. I loved the idea of helping people heal naturally. I applied to Life University back in the fall of 2011 and was accepted to start in the spring of 2012. The journey to becoming a chiropractor wasn’t an easy one. I was taking an average of 26 credits every eleven weeks. It was a lot of late night studying, practical exams, and national board exams. Although I was taking a very heavy curriculum, it was all worth it in 2015 when I walked across that stage surrounded by the people who supported me through my journey: my classmates, my friends, and my family. I entered into the profession not fully understanding how much joy and light it would bring into my life. My parents and my grandmother encouraged me to chase after my dreams and to this day, continue to motivate and inspire me. I love waking up every morning with a purpose. I get to come into my office, work with incredible people, and help patients get well every day. I practice pediatric, family, and sports chiropractic and love every single minute of it.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It wasn’t always a smooth road. At times, it was really challenging. I learned a lot on my friends and together we all supported one another. There was a lot of stress with board exams and juggling all of the other coursework at the same time. I also found help in my mentors. Dr. Marni Capes, Dr. Eric Nicholas, and Dr. Bill Hamilton really helped guide me throughout the program and educated me about what to expect in the real world. Outside of the coursework, the biggest challenge was transitioning into the role of small business owner. I learned a lot from my internship experience with Dr. Dan Roberts. He sat down and explained, in detail, what to do to help make me successful. To this day, these four encourage me and continue to provide guidance. I wouldn’t be the doctor I am today without their positive influence.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Momentum Chiropractic story. Tell us more about the business.
My office, Momentum Chiropractic, is a pediatric, family, and sports chiropractic practice. I love working with people of all ages and athletes. I am a certified chiropractic extremity practitioner and with that, I work a lot with extremity conditions such as: tennis elbow, shoulder impingement, plantar fasciitis, and iliotibial band syndrome. I created Momentum Chiropractic with the idea that when people get healthy, they gain momentum to thrive. I work with a lot of families and it brings me so much joy when I see an entire family in here together working on leading a healthy lifestyle. I am most proud of that. I think the office is different than most because we not only provide chiropractic care, but also therapies in addition to their adjustment. These therapies are designed to complement the adjustment and promote healing.
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I think I’ve had a bit of both good and bad luck. I believe that’s a part of life. You work with the hand you’re dealt and make it the best you possibly can. I’m lucky my patients trust me with their care and also lucky to have such an incredible support system. I try not to think of it in terms of luck, but rather, blessings. I have been blessed with an amazing opportunity and don’t take any of it for granted.
