It has definitely not been a smooth road. Yamma’s first husband Darren Lumar and the father of her two children was murdered in Atlanta in 2008, just two years after she lost her father. She has raised two children through many of life’s ups and downs and credits her family for helping her through this transition.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Daughter of Soul Productions James Brown Family foundation – what should we know?
The James Brown Family Foundation is a 501c3 devoted to music education. This foundation was started along with her sister as a way to continue her father’s charitable endeavors. We are continuing his annual Turkey and Toy giveaway in Augusta which has been going on for over 20 years. We also have the James Brown Academy of Music Pupils (JAMP) that specifically teaches music education to young children. We have managed to change the lives of children and expose them to areas of the music business that they would otherwise never see. I have also introduced our health initiate to serve the underserved communities. This promotes access to health screenings and education to all communities. Through Daughter of Soul Productions, the book, Cold Sweat My Father James Brown and me debuted in August 2014 as well as ” Wounds to Wisdom” a survivor series. Through this company, Yamma has been involved in being a consultant producer on, Get on UP (The James Brown Biopic) Daughter of Soul Productions has also worked with other producers on “Prisoner of Love” a Comcast TV show devoted to telling the stories of domestic violence survivors. This company has also put yamma in the position to be a co-host on DASH radio with Heather Hayes, The daughter of Isaac Hayes. Yamma and Heather host the show “Soul Sisters” on the Pure Soul station on DASH Radio.

Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
My family (Husband, children, sister, brother-in-law and mother) and a host of friends that have been very supportive on my journey. They have not doubted me but encouraged me to seize my opportunities and be a beacon of light for others with similar stories. You always need others to show up at events, contribute time as well as financially taking a position in your endeavors. My most recent business is a skin care line, YB Essentials that was started with my daughter, Sydney Lumar, who is a student at FIDM in LA studying Beauty and Skin Care Development and Marketing.
