Today we’d like to introduce you to Dru Phillips.
Hi Dru, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today.
My journey in photography began during my high school years when I used a disposable camera from Walmart. At that time, my focus was more on capturing moments rather than perfecting each photograph. It was during my undergraduate studies in illustration at the Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) that I discovered my true passion for photography. Since then, photography has become my primary source of income, and I have transitioned away from illustration unless it’s for my own personal pleasure. In addition to practicing photography, I also teach it to others.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The path in the creative industry is often challenging. Whether due to personal mental blocks or the highly competitive nature of the field, there are always obstacles to overcome. I face the daily task of presenting my work to potential clients and must also persuade them to choose my services over utilizing AI solutions to achieve their objectives. Also, I have to make sure not to undercut my fellow photographers, which is a whole other issue in the creative world.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I have integrated my fine art background with my commercial portraiture to create captivating mixed-media pieces. Feeling a need for a fresh perspective in my photography, I redirected my focus towards the creative freedom that brings me joy. By incorporating acrylic paint, I enhance the narrative of the portraits I capture. The fusion of digital and traditional media has not only revitalized my passion for photography but has also attracted a wider audience.
What was your favorite childhood memory?
I don’t remember much of my childhood, but if I have to pick a moment I remember, it has to be when my brother took me with him to the pizza shop in Queens, NY, and I watched him play the Robocop arcade game. He never took me anywhere with him, so this was a big deal.
