Meet Drusilla Gibbs of Sitting Fur Love

Today we’d like to introduce you to Drusilla Gibbs.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I started off as a Kennel tech and worked my way up to being a vet tech. From there, a receptionist friend of mine started recommending me to clients who didn’t want to board their pups, with the blessing of the practice owner.

I had been working for another pet sitting company doing visits and so had gotten my feet wet a little.

With my animal behavior and health background I had a lot of attractive qualities that put pet owners at ease.

From there, my business did its own thing. I imagine for others, much of my lived experience starting a business would be a dream. It grew itself. Through word of mouth and then a few years later through my website as well. I have paid for no marking other than whatever Go daddy may do in addition to hosting my website

It’s been amazing and I am so so grateful both for my amazing clients, extended fur babies and the past versions of myself who gave it 150% providing care and getting comfortable with being uncomfortable in order to grow as a person and business owner

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
The business/client growth itself was an unbelievable smooth road. The struggle more came with balancing demand and mental health. I was often exhausted, especially when I started working full time for myself and doing overnights more consistently.

It was a LOT when also factoring in all of the internal and personal work I was doing on myself. Learning effective communication, deepening emotional intelligence and understanding of myself and others and learning to roll with things or let them roll off.

My journey to a more grounded stable and capable self version of myself has been pretty fraught on the personal side and burn out and immaturity did cause some mistakes along the way. But I learned and I and the business are thriving now.

We’ve been impressed with Sitting Fur Love , but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
My background in vet med and decades long study and desire to understand animals in general, has melded into a beautifully intuitive connection. I am one of those people that animals love. I know how to stay calm to help a nervous or fearfully aggressive pet grow. I have success with training as well and am looking to grow that part of the business now. To me, every creature is an individual worthy of respect, apology when needed, and an appropriate amount of consensual nose boops and kisses. I aim to keep my business as small as possible while still providing over the top quality care and consideration. I want to be a neighborhood and household name so I know everyone at least decently well and I get to see my extended fur babies, even though I have two contractors now. I love them like my own and I also hope I can one day find some investment into a more non profit portion of the business to benefit the community which also benefits me as one part of that community. My prices reflect the care, effort, and impact I make and hope to make.

We’d love to hear about any fond memories you have from when you were growing up?
I don’t know if I could pick one favorite. But I’d imagine if I could, it would include the times I sat with a stray cat and made friends, or curled up with a book somewhere quiet or in nature
