Today we’d like to introduce you to Rocquez RoQ Fluellen.
Rocquez RoQ, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I’ve always been a musician. Upon entering college I felt like I should major in what came easiest to me, which was creating art. Painting, drawing, sculpting. Something about creating made me feel proud. I’m still not quite sure what made me purchase my first camera during those years but I spent my entire refund check on it so it had to be used. Starting off, I had no idea what to do or how to use it but I was determined to master it. I eventually started a nonprofit based off of my new craft and acquired a mentor (Chad Finley), who I view as a master at his craft. He guided me and trained me to be able to produce the quality of work that would launch my career.
Has it been a smooth road?
I’ve had cameras stolen, My organization was a big part of my career and passion during the early years and it had its challenges. The expenses of having the proper equipment, School didn’t turn out quite like I planned it to, and the general support that one hopes for wasn’t always there.
What’s the hardest part of your job?
I think the hardest part of my job has nothing to do with the actual work. of course, retouching and deadlines can be a bit strenuous at times but the main “hard” part I have is trying to stay relevant in this ever-changing industry. Branding is such a key thing to keep a business going. Keeping your name out there, trying to stay “popular” all while trying to remain loyal to your brand and keeping self-respect.
What are you striving for, what criteria or markers have you set as indicators of success?
Personally, I define success in terms of happiness. I don’t need the best car and the biggest house. I just want things that make me happy, and I want to be able to obtain those things doing what I love. If I could be comfortable waking up making art and it alone paying for my day to day, be able to apply myself within the community as well as help others, THEN and only then will I consider myself successful.
What are your plans for the future?
I plan on further developing my model development business. I find joy in finding those unique and rare faces and putting them on a possibly successful path in modeling that they probably wouldn’t have done for themselves.
