Meet East Atlanta Photographer: Anthony Gary

Today we’d like to introduce you to Anthony Gary.

Anthony, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I started taking pictures when I was in high school when I was taken out of JROTC and switched to journalism. I bought my first camera at 24 years and I have been apart of the Atlanta art community since then. I took on a few internships to gather knowledge of photographer and landed with a photographer named Leo Marshall. He introduced not only to new concepts but creative campaigns.

Has it been a smooth road?
It definitely hasn’t been smooth road becoming a freelance photographer. The biggest struggle has been people trying receive services for free using exposure as compensation; as if that’s legal tender accepted by AT&T. Also, the quality of photographer has cheapened over the years with cameras becoming more accessible and many see it as a way to make quick money but charging $75 for something I would charge $500 for; in any case, the clients learns why I charge my prices the hard way. Also with event photography, I deal with unauthorized photo usage in publications and music festivals.

What’s your outlook for the industry over the next 5-10 years?
I see myself doing more campaigns (magazine and companies) and having my work exhibited around the world. I’m working on a photo book covering the homelessness in Atlanta. I’m already brainstorming on my idea to cover once this project is completed.

What has been the primary challenge you’ve faced?
The biggest challenge is learning new techniques and keeping up with the quality of work that every changing. Don’t know a lot of photographers willing to teach because they’re afraid you’ll take work from them.

Let’s change gears – is there any advice you’d like to give?
Learn your craft before you start charging money, it cheapens the work. Learn to network with everyone, you never know who has worked for you, but be careful of those who use exposure for compensation.
