Today we’d like to introduce you to Ebon Brown The Nutritionist.
Ebon, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I’ve been cooking since I was a child. My mother always had me in the kitchen, teaching me everything she knew. She would say, “If something happened to me, you gotta make sure you take care of your dad, brother and sister.” After that, you couldn’t keep me out the kitchen. If I wasn’t cooking, I was definitely in there eating. It brings me happiness to bring family and friends together through cooking. Thinking back to my childhood, every weekend friends and family would get together and have some kinda kickback at the park or someones house. I still remember the joy in my Aunty’s and Uncle’s faces when they taught me their favorite secret recipes and the smiles on their faces watching us enjoy whatever the cooked. I swear when you seen all the Underwood’s/Browns in the kitchen, you knew off top the food would be off the chain! I loved seeing my Mom and dad dancing, laughing, and cooking in the kitchen. So from childhood; food meant family, friends, love and happiness. I can say “I’ve learned from the best” and the crazy part is, I have never seen my mom or any of her siblings measure anything! My mom would grab the seasoning shake it over the pot, then look in the pot, mix it up, taste it and sometimes added more and other times say “now that’s good” while doing a little 2step with a smile on her face.
Now when it came to desserts, my dad was the king! I remember him being so happy to show us how to make his famous blueberry cheesecake, candy yams and his fried turkey! I still laugh thinking about how he would whisper ingredients amounts, so my mom couldn’t hear how much sugar we were actually pouring in the cheesecake and candy yams.
But when came to recipes, measuring and using sharp knifes. I learned all that from my little sister. She went to culinary school and knew everything! She showed me how to chop with sharp knives and all the safety rules around the kitchen. She’s the first person to actually explain and show me the importance of writing all your recipes down. Her and my mom came up with my business name and a ton of other great ideas.
After having so many great teachers, I started meal prepping for my son, aka my dog Ivory, and myself. I would post on social media and people started inquiring if I would prep for them. So I did a test run to see if it would be worth it, and it most definitely was. Business was good in California, and everyone was soo excited to supportive. Then I decided to moved to Atlanta and couldn’t find work that would compare to my wages back in Cali. So, I started Meal Prepping for my friend Jermaine, and he started advertising and people start ordering. It was that quick! I must say ATLANTA put me on the map. Business started picking up so fast, faster than I imagined. I was still so new to the Atlanta area and running a new business was a task. But when I realize I had to get on top on things, I took a step back and got things organized. I had to structure my brand. I’m still changing things to better my brand. But now my mind, body and soul are on it everyday and I can’t slowdown or fail. At first, this was for me! Now it’s for my dad who passed November 2019. I have to push harder and stay true to the skill god gave me and build for family.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It’s been pretty smooth. But I did have to learn money management, time management and the importance of consistency. When I first started I would shop, prep, and deliver all in one day. I have no idea what I was thinking. After a few days of swollen feet, backaches and mind racing, I start scheduling when I would shop, prep and deliver. My business and my life started to make since again. Just from simply scheduling task and breaking down tasks in different days turned everything into a success. Now the hardest thing for me is constantly posting on social media and making sure I always created new content. Things are still a work in process with that but it’s always helpful when you can identify where you need improvement.
The growth I’ve had in Atlanta has taught me why consistency is key. I never lost site of my vision. I spoke what I wanted aloud and created my business plan and with that, there was no stopping ME! As my mom would say, “See It Say It Write it”, and that’s been my life’s motto. Diamond Knife is definitely still growing, and I’m so grateful for how far business and I have come. I’ve had such an amazing support team. My Family and Friends are hella dope! Diamond Knife has been successful because of them, but also because I’m beyond blessed and Fa Sho prayed up.
Please tell us about your business.
Diamond Knife is a meal prep service that specializes in healthier eating habits. We offer a nutritionally balanced breakfast, lunch, and dinner delivered to your door.
- Saves Time: It will save you time during the week. Meal prep eliminates the time spent on cooking daily and the time wasted on waiting for service at a restaurant.
- Saves Money: One of the more compelling reasons to choose meal prep is its economic benefit: you save money! On average, eating out is more expensive than cooking at home. Take a moment to calculate how much you would typically spend on lunch and dinner each week if you ate out daily.
- Helps You Stay on Track: With Diamond Knife preparing your meals and healthy snacks in advance, you are less likely to go out and mindlessly grab snacks that will cost more than 2 of my full course meals. It’ll also helps you stay on track with your health, finances, and your food intake.
The quality, presentation, and the flavor of the food is what we focus on and what we want you to ALWAYS remember. It’s also a must as my old school jams playing when slaying/ cooking in the kitchen. My food will always be flavorful with a dash of soul, positivity and great energy because I always meditate before I prepare all the meals even my own.
Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
I would like to thank my parents, Senovia Brown and Clifford Brown, for teaching and guiding me to become the successful entrepreneur I am today. Thank you for your love and compassion In everything you do; you’ve made ample sacrifices for us and continue to do so everyday. You guys have shown me what it means to be a strong woman. From both of you I’ve learned to be generous, caring, strong, compassionate, and empathetic. You have taught me the importance of helping others, and how to be the person someone can turn to when they need help. Your unconditional love and undying support has gotten me through my own struggles; seeing how you handle your own struggles has taught me how to be strong through mine. Knowing I have parents like you allows me to be strong in all I do—I know I have a support system in both of you to get me through anything I may face, big or small. Thank you for always pushing me to be the best version of myself. Thank you for your support in everything I do.
Thank you to my brother, Romeo Brown, for showing me what hard work and dedication really means. Watching you helped me in soooo many ways and I’m thankful for that. To always be honest and be myself no matter what people say. You’re the strongest person I know and you continue to amaze me. Continue to spread your love, energy and beautiful smile. You will always be my hero and the only person I let boss me around. Love you lil sister and I’m proud of you!
