Today we’d like to introduce you to Edward Dorsey.
Hi Edward, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I’ve been interested in and involved with the arts ever since elementary age. I drew my favorite cartoon characters, which eventually morphed into graphic design. However, as a teenager, I found a love for writing and filmmaking. I took both of those loves to Savannah College of Arts & Design and majored in Film & Television while getting a minor in Creative Writing. I also explored interests in other arts (poetry, fiction writing, screenwriting, and several others).
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
There have been several rough patches. After graduating, I had to explore further what I wanted to do with the skills I’ve learned. There was also the act of sharpening my craft and establishing my style as a filmmaker. Several times I’ve put a project out there that didn’t quite get the reaction I wanted or even opportunities that didn’t pan out. But at the end of the day, no matter how frustrating it can be, I know that I can learn from them to be both a better artist and a better person.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
My main love in the arts is screenwriting. The medium lends me to creating worlds with creative freedom and professional editing. Through trial and error of several projects, I discovered that I have a fondness for taking two or three different genres and seeing how if they fit well together or not. My web series pilot, “Redeeming,” combines fight choreography with comic book art. Years later, I created a web series called “Harvest Street,” which combines 90’s culture, Jazz-Hop music, and city life. Currently, I’m pitching a screenplay, “East Side Warriors,” that mixes Hip-Hop culture with Japanese mythology. There are tried and true methods that work, but there’s room to try new things and have fun with them! I believe that’s what sets me apart from others. I treat the arts almost like a science.
Do you have recommendations for books, apps, blogs, etc?
I definitely listen to many audiobooks; specifically the genre I happen to be writing at the time. I also watch “Hello Future Me” and “Overly Sarcastic Productions” for Worldbuilding and literary inspiration. I also keep video essays, such as “Every Frame A Painting,” for film studies and critiques from movie review podcasts, such as “Double Toasted.”
