Today we’d like to introduce you to Edward Sun
Hi Edward, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I stumbled into design by accident. I was jobless, going broke trying to be a rapper and artist manager, when my car broke down. I had $2,000 in my bank account, and the auto shop told me it would cost $2,000 to fix my car. Through a random connection, I applied to a full-time job at a creative agency, and the owner took a chance on me—someone with no design degree, no experience, nothing. When he offered me the job, he said, “I’m not hiring you for your skill or experience; I’m hiring you for your work ethic and eagerness to learn.”
Everything I know now about design I learned on that job. I quickly discovered a new passion for design, and as an exercise to improve my Photoshop skills, I started posting content online. Two years and 12 million views later, that’s now also accidentally become a huge part of my livelihood and passion.
Really none of it was my own intention or plan—it was all God.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Definitely not a smooth road. Struggled to pay rent, neglected my health, damaged all kinds of relationships, and overworked before finding a stable job I loved. Even after that point, imposter syndrome was often paralyzing and self-sabotaging. If I didn’t have a church community of non-creatives—people who didn’t care about what I did for work—to ground me, to love me regardless of my work, and to challenge me to grow in my faith, I wouldn’t have made it through. I’d still be struggling to survive today!
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I’m a designer and content creator. As a designer, I specialize in branding and web design, bringing world-class design to Christian-led organizations of all kinds (for profit, nonprofit, churches, and individuals). In the faith-driven space, it’s incredibly difficult to find senior-level designers who have designed for Fortune 500 brands AND nonprofits/churches in a variety of sectors with the breadth of experience in large and small-format print, digital, web, motion, and environment design that I have. Recognizing this scarcity is a huge reason why I decided to serve Christian-led orgs specifically. These orgs are championing some of the most important causes in the world, but there’s a shortage of industry-leading creative to support their campaigns. I stepped out from my agency job of 6+ years to specifically meet this need in the market.
Alright so before we go can you talk to us a bit about how people can work with you, collaborate with you or support you?
