Today we’d like to introduce you to Edwin Lynn.
Edwin, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Well, in short, I started shooting photography about six years ago as a self-taught street photographer and a lighting assistant with Hannibal Matthews out of Atlanta. I grew passion as I started reading about Gordon Parks and James Baldwin learning how Parks used his photography and James Baldwin used his voice for revolutionary causes behind there work. My photography is a tool to get across what I’ve seen and believe that is going on in America and express vocally what’s needed. Right now, it seems like we are moving backwards in time… with so much media division and manipulation of the mind towards division. I feel like there is so much to photograph, especially when the media will not show what most artists from the grassroots level see and believe. I always think and still believe art is the common ground for the people no matter the race or gender it speaks the truths and the now. A photographer will shoot what his minds see and speak what the heart says. I’ve always tried to intertwine the two.
Has it been a smooth road?
It’s been a long journey of working and crafting my photography especially here in Atlanta, but not all bad, I’ve worked with many great clients along the way, that including Vogue Africa, Vans, Arsenic Magazine, Creative Loafing, Afro-Punk, Saul Williams and last but not least, Dead Prez shoutout to Mikeflo, but from what I’ve seen on the humbling side of photography, seems like most photographers/artists do not work together here in Atlanta, they have become a one-man team which in short, makes the industry tough to mold especially when artist do not control the narrative that is getting shown and curated. We have to start working together, Atlanta is full of great talent and it’s time for the ARTISTS to BE seen and their minds be heard. MOST OF ALL, KEEP PUSHING.
Please tell us more about your work, what you are currently focused on and most proud of.
My photography company is mostly Fine Art Portrait/Editorial based Photography. My special is shooting Black and white photos, the contrast and use of light gives a nostalgic look instantly. I’m most pride of the journey being that I’m self-taught, there were no rules to break and when I learned the science of photography, I was able to create a very creative direction. What sets me apart from others is my Photography, it’s a tool to be able to speak my voice on a platform which is needed.
Is our city a good place to do what you do?
Yes, Atlanta is a great city, one of the best in the world for an artist. It’s a big small city, everyone knows each other, it’s all love in a tight-knit community. I recommend starting wherever you can, have a starting point, a city does not create your talent, you the artist does.
