Today we’d like to introduce you to Elijah Joiner.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Elijah. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
Making music has always been something I’ve had a love for. I always wrote songs in my free time but I never had the courage to actually record or release anything. My senior year of high school, I started taking music more seriously but I still didn’t want to release anything. It wasn’t until I was going off to college that I released my first song, a remix to the popular Eminem record “My Name Is.”
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It has definitely not been a smooth road. The biggest challenges are finding a way to get heard, constantly trying to improve my sound, dealing with doubters, haters, and even self-doubt. Being an artist in 2019 is difficult because there are so many people who want to do the same. It is hard trying to stand out, and be different while remaining consistent.
Please tell us more about what you do, what sets you apart from others.
I make music, specifically rap music. What sets me apart from a lot of other artists is that I am 100% me in my music. Compromising nothing. I am most proud of the support that I have gained in such a small amount of time. Being that I just got started a year ago, I feel as if there are a lot of people who genuinely enjoy my music and support me. That is an amazing feeling.
If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
I would take more time to appreciate the art around me. For the longest time, I felt so much pressure to create, but nothing would come. I’ve come to figure out that rushing and forcing things leads me to feel as if what I’ve done is incomplete. So, if I had to start over, I’d take more time to complete things, and I’d be a little more introspective.
