Today we’d like to introduce you to Elizabeth Mann.
Elizabeth, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
My passion for event planning began senior year in college. I was a finance major dedicated to making waves in the business world. I planned an event for friends and families for our graduation and found my calling. I headed back to Atlanta and applied for a receptionist job at a local destination management company (DMC). As soon as I got my foot in the door I was hooked. I moved up to be a Sales Manager, selling and operating my programs. I was then recruited to the Director of Sales position at a start up DMC. From there I opened my own DMC in 2015, Scout Local Destination Management.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
With any career there are struggles along the way. Having a clear vision from the start of my career was a luxury. Owning my own company was something I always wanted to accomplish. Having the courage to do it was a constant struggle. I was always questioning “Is it the right time?” “What if I fail?” “How quickly can I grow the business?” (LOL).
Tell us about your company. What do you do, what do you specialize in, what are you known for, etc. What are you most proud of as a company? What sets you apart from others?
Scout Local Destination Management is a full service Destination Management Company that specializes in events and transportation in and around the Atlanta area. Most of our clients come to Atlanta with a conference either at one of our fabulous hotels or at the Georgia World Congress Center. Our job is to find the right resources for their group while in town.
We gain an understanding of their goals and manage their needs while in town. Whether sourcing a venue for a kick-off event or handling transportation to and from business meetings at the GWCC, we use our experience and expertise to make sure their goals are met. We’re known for our excellent service and attention to detail but we also thrive in our creativity. We have a long database of event ideas and themes that we add to every week! Staying current is very important to Scout Local.
One major difference between us and our competitors is that we offer our client one point of contact for their entire program. From inception through logistics planning, the client only works with one experienced professional. That way the original event we created with the client does not get lost when passed on to a separate operations team. We also have a large resource of contract staff that supports and carries out the client’s vision while on site.
Our experienced staff each have specific strengths. We pair the right staff with our groups to make the most of the attendee experience. We receive a lot of very positive feedback on our staff.
What is “success” or “successful” for you?
Setting goals is a way to manage your success. Without them you don’t hit certain markers. I think success comes from working toward your goals. They may change along the way but if you keep pushing and keep working toward those goals you earn success. And keep your mind open. Simply because you do not hit your goals in the exact way you thought you would does not mean you are not successful.
