Today we’d like to introduce you to Elizabeth Mitchell.
Elizabeth, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I’m the Owner and Operator of Hair Flair Studio. My mother, Dorothy P. Smith was a successful business owner (DPS & Associates) and was my direct influence for my intended career path. I watched her successfully run a business and balance life like it was second nature. This made it clear early in life that business ownership was for me. It wasn’t until a few years later that my passion (the field of Cosmetology) became apparent. Education was the main sermon preached in my home by my father, the late Rev. E. J. Smith. I was taught to become well educated and do what it was I wanted to do BUT do it well. I added a spin on the concept and made it my own. My goal was to become educated, do what I love AND to do it for myself. 1) Education 2) Hone my craft 3) Create a business out of it
In May of 2006, I graduated from The Albany State University College of Business. Less than a month later, I was enrolled and had started studies at Empire Beauty School.
In June of 2007, I received my credentials from Empire Beauty School to become a Master Cosmetologist. Since then, I have made a point to continuously educate myself in Trichology.
In November of 2015, one of my dreams was realized. Hair Flair Studio was born! My passion is not only hair that looks great but hair that is healthy. Combine the two and that’s where my heart lies. Health over trend but I’m here for the FLAIR and all things cute, girly and sassy. I believe everyone is capable of healthy, luxurious tresses no matter who you are and no matter what length of hair. “Hair with Style. Hair with Care. Hair with Flair.” The GOAL. The PROCESS. The RESULT.
In October of 2018, another dream came true. After years of thought and research, I debuted my first two products. I formulated these products by hand mainly out of frustration from not finding what I needed. As a hair professional, as well as an eczema sufferer, I was determined to use my knowledge and experience to help heal hair, skin and scalp issues. My Scalp Soothing Spray has been saving the day for curly girls who wear protective styles for periods of time and my Hair, Skin & Scalp Oil has literally been used from head to toe on men, women, children and even small babies.
My professional career in the field of Cosmetology started over a decade ago, but I feel I have only begun to embark on my journey.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
One of my biggest struggles has been life/business balance. It takes lots of time and energy to successfully run a business AND wear the other hats I wear in life.
I am the proud mother of two very smart and energetic children which means that I am already busy with them. They are love school as well as their extra-curricular activities. Football, Dance, Cheer, Chorus, Scouts, Academic Debate Team, reading groups, etc.
I am also active in my church, Destiny Worship Center.
I have learned the hard way that to be the BEST at all the rolls I play, I must slow down and rest from time to time. I am no good if I’m burned out and unhealthy. Self-care (physical/mental/spiritual care) is a MUST!
It’s safe to say that an Entrepreneur’s job is never done and not for the weak at heart!
Hair Flair Studio – what should we know? What do you do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Hair Flair Studio specializes in healthy natural hair maintenance, cuts, color, relaxers & proper extension installation. We welcome all hair types and textures.
We are most proud of our ability to service clients of all ethnicities and backgrounds. We are experts in hair health for any and all textures. We can color, cut, straighten, curl, relax, perm, trim, treat, steam, highlight, lowlight, twist, braid, plait, loc, sew, bond, crochet, micro link anyone!
Our diversity sets us apart from the rest. Clients don’t have to worry about if we can “their your hair”. Yes, we can. They won’t have to worry about if they should or could refer their coworker or neighbor because they have different hair. They won’t have to wonder if we can take care of them as well. Yes, we can.
What is “success” or “successful” for you?
I personally define success not as an actual destination but as a journey. To me, success is when you are able to overcome obstacles, learn from them, and continue to move forward with your intended goal.
Success is when you wake up everyday and actually like how your life looks.
