Today we’d like to introduce you to Ellarie Noel.
Ellarie, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
In 2013, I started posting colorful and fun makeup looks on Instagram. I would come home every day after picking my daughter up from daycare and practice different looks. It was a stressful time for me, so doing my makeup was an escape. I thought it would also help me attract freelance work on top of my job, and I was even hired at MAC part-time, but I didn’t have anyone to help me watch my daughter so I was unable to take on the extra hours after awhile… plus, it became stressful not being able to have full creative control over clients, and I started to dislike doing makeup on anyone other than myself.
That same year, I was unexpectedly laid off from my job the same month my lease was up for my apartment that I lived in with my 2-year-old daughter. Losing my job turned out to be a blessing because I would have been too scared to quit. Even though I was terrified of what was gonna happen next, I didn’t apply for another job. I borrowed money from relatives and exhausted my savings to live, I had a strong feeling that an opportunity was going to arise for me through Instagram. I kept working hard, and about two months after losing my job, I was presented with an opportunity to collab with a makeup brand. Six months after that, I received another collaboration, and opportunities and partnerships kept coming from brands that I never in a million years thought would ever notice me.
Six years later, I own my house and car and have worked with brands such as Covergirl, Olay, YSL Beauty and so many more, and I’ve had two collaborations with Colourpop. My daughter has made a name for herself as well, and has worked with Johnsons, Cantu, Carols Daughter, Curls and more. Throughout all of my struggles, she has always remained so happy and cheerful, so I can’t even say that I am surprised that she’s captured her own attention. She is also going to start getting into music and wants to create her own merchandise, so I am currently trying to make that happen for her.
As for me, there are so many more things I want to do and am working on that I think I am purposely trying to drive myself crazy lol. When I am really passionate about something, I do any and everything I can to make it happen. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t. But what life has taught me so far is that anything can happen, even when you least expect it, so keep going because you never know who is watching or when God will present you with the blessings that you were praying for. I have never taken anything for granted and I am so thankful that I have been able to build something for my family and pray that it continues to grow so that I can go beyond my family and help build something that will positively impact the world.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Not at all, the end of my pregnancy was pretty stressful. I eventually had to move in with my sister, and me and my daughter slept on her couch for almost a year. I had PPD and cried nearly every day. I really didnt have much of a support system besides my sister and best friend, but they had their own life. The rest of my family was in California, so I really felt helpless. I thought I was failing as a parent and everything was crumbling around me. Even on my saddest days though, I prayed and would always say to myself that I knew what I was going through was temporary and would make sense later.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with Yoshi Doll – tell our readers more, for example, what you’re most proud of and what sets you apart from others.
I named my business Yoshi Doll not only because that is my daughter’s nickname, but years ago, I also attempted to start her own website for children’s clothing. I soon realized that I bit off way more than I could chew because I couldn’t keep up with doing everything by myself. However, I do plan to relaunch soon now that I have a lot more help!
I am mostly known for makeup tutorials that I do on both youtube and Instagram. I’ve modeled in several ad campaigns as well. I film and edit video for myself and my daughter who does hair tutorials and vlogs.
I dont like to give myself an official title because I dont want to be defined as someone who just does makeup tutorials. I call myself a Mommapreneur because I literally feel like I could enter any industry that I had an idea or passion for and make something happen. I am most proud that I have been able to remain myself and grounded, and that I haven’t had to attach myself to anyone, lie about my life, or be controversial in order to be successful. That is something that I can proudly teach to my daughter. There are hardly any ‘real’ people in my field, and I refuse to sell out for a buck or be fake to be popular, which is something that sets me apart from others.
So, what’s next? Any big plans?
Besides the brand deals that I get, I’ve really been trying to channel more of my energy into blossoming my daughter’s brand. I have been gathering the tools to launch her a merchandise and accessory line, as well as taking her to the music studio for songs that I have written for her.
I also am aiming to launch my own merchandise as well. Not too long ago, I was offered quite a few guests/permanent judging positions for beauty competition shows, and though I was unable to do many of them, I thoroughly enjoyed the ones I could do and would love to do more. There are even bigger things that I want to do but when the time is right I will tackle them. I don’t think I’ll ever be content until I’ve succeeded in everything that I am passionate about.
However, I am most excited about completing my house projects! My pool is almost done being built, my basement is being finished, and I’m almost happy with how I’ve decorated so far, lol, but being able to accomplish this all on my one is one of the proudest moments of my life.
