Meet Ellis Flurry

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ellis Flurry.

Ellis, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
When I was in college, I originally set out to get involved in politics, but after working on various campaigns and seeing what it was like at the grassroots level, I realized that it wasn’t the best way for me to connect with the world. Soon after, I realized that what I was looking for was comedy, and about midway through college, I started writing my own material for sketches and stand up.

About a year and a half into it now, I’m working to refine my writing and performing skills as much as possible by releasing sketches and short films throughout the year through my YouTube channel. I want to keep getting better and plan to continue doing this work for many years to come.

Has it been a smooth road?
It hasn’t always been so smooth, in fact, most of the time, it’s actually been a bit gritty. All my work has been independent of school and paid work, so fitting my dreams in with my life in college has been challenging at times, especially when I’ve had to rely on help from people who are really busy. This has resulted in plenty of midnight filming as well as many shoots that probably should have involved ten people behind the scenes only involving two people.

Another challenge, of course, is that not every joke or plotline lands with people. There’s no formula for getting it just right with these things so, often, I just have to be okay with potential failure and remember to understand that this is hard and that failure is part of it sometimes. It’s especially hard when not even your mom laughs at a joke you spent time on but nevertheless, these types of experiences are what shape people, so I always have to be grateful for them.

We’d love to hear more about your work.
I am a writer, director, and actor, and I release original sketches, short films, and have a short web series on my YouTube channel Ellis Flurry Comedy. The pieces primarily focus on the political absurdities that surround us day to day, and sometimes more broadly. I’m interested in the ways people navigate these and other situations that can be funny, puzzling, awkward, and illuminating – often all at the same time. Scenarios that hit all of these seem really abundant at the moment, and can be exhausting unless we can find a way to laugh, and maybe steady ourselves as we find our way through them.

How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
Comedy and anything in media is always changing, so who knows where the pandemic and other global phenomena are going to take it. That being said, I’m confident that there will always be a place in this world for originals who bring honesty and humility to their work, and I know that I’m one of those people.
