Today we’d like to introduce you to Emily Allen.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
My story has taken me all across the world. I was born and raised on a small farm in Iowa and then after I graduated I headed to Connecticut on a full ride scholarship to play volleyball. Sports had always been my life from age 6 on, so after college had come and gone I felt that pursuing sports as my career felt ‘right’.
That lead me to move to Virginia + attend the VCU Center for Sports Leadership program, one of the best decisions I could have made at the time. This program, little did I know at the time, was shaping me and providing me with the skills + knowledge to launch my dream design company.
Life threw Terrell and I some curve balls, lead us into various directions (and countries) and then we landed in Atlanta! We just recently got married and are happy to call Atlanta home!
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Life is never truly a smooth road in my opinion, but that is what makes everyone’s story so unique. When I graduated from my Master’s program at Virginia Commonwealth University, I jumped into a job that I thought would fulfill me. It was a perfect job on paper, but it truly sucked the life out of me. I wasn’t the motivated, creative person I had always been. It just made me feel that life was about work, paying bills and waking up to do it all over again.
I was raised in a family that always taught me that life is too short to hate what you do every day, so when Terrell and I got the opportunity to move to China, we jumped on it. It was such a challenging time in our life, being surrounded by 6 million people who couldn’t understand us + trying to launch Amavi Studio. Looking back now, it was the best decision we have ever made! Not only did it allow me to start the business I had always dreamed about, but we also were able to explore the world in a way we never imagined.
Please tell us about Amavi Studio.
Amavi Studio is a bespoke design studio that specializes in small business branding, websites and wedding stationery. I started Amavi Studio based on the meaning of Amavi: I have loved. This phrase has been the motto of my life from day one. Doing everything with love and living authentically. For me, this business is not just about creating a design, it’s about telling an authentic and inspiring story, something that is raw and filled with genuine passion.
My passion in life is not only to create designs from my experiences but also to inspire you to live a life you love, celebrating every aspect of it. And that is why I choose to put myself, my adventures, and my heart into each and every design Amavi Studio makes. I believe that everyone has the ability to live an authentic life; we just have to be brave enough to find it and stand up for it.
Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
My favorite memory from my childhood is being out in the workshop with my dad, building anything and everything. My dad was always such a creative, handy guy + I know that is where my creativity started. Still to this day, when I make it home we always take on building some type of project.
