Today we’d like to introduce you to Emily Brown.
Hi Emily, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
Photography has always been a hobby of mine, passed on to me by my dad when he gave me my first camera. That hobby remained just a hobby for years, mainly consisting of nature and travel photography with the occasional photo shoot for family events and friends’ graduations.
I’ve been an elementary Special Education teacher for almost seven years now, but the dream has always been to create this photography business as a side gig. It wasn’t until my now-husband encouraged me to take the plunge in 2020 that E.Henri Photography was born.
Since then, I have made connections with so many new people, discovered beautiful new locations in Georgia, and been fortunate enough to take part in some amazing creative projects.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The road has certainly not been smooth and continues to be bumpy even two years in. Honestly, the biggest challenge is editing photos after a long day of work at the school. I fall asleep every time. It never fails!
Joking aside (even though that is a true statement), time is always the biggest challenge with managing a full-time job and a small business. And as I sit here doing this interview, almost 37 weeks pregnant, I have a sneaking suspicion that the struggle is only going to continue, if not get to be a little more challenging very soon.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am a Special Education teacher by day and a photographer by weekend, evening, and midnight editing sessions. I love capturing moments of joy, growth, and communion. I believe that we were all made for relationships and that we were put on this earth for that very purpose. My mission is to preserve moments for my clients that serve as a reminder of their goodness, their purpose, and their people.
During the school day, I teach elementary school kids with all sorts of different abilities, which is my dream job. However, that dream has grown. Now, the dream of all dreams is to combine my two passions. I want to spend my time photographing the population of people that I’m passionate about serving.
Right now, that looks like taking pictures of former students and their families, being as involved as possible in the special needs community of North Georgia, and shooting any and all types of photography for people.
Where we are in life is often partly because of others. Who/what else deserves credit for how your story turned out?
Well, I got married last year to this guy who I like a whole heck of a lot. He’s the instigator of this side gig of mine, always challenging me to be who I’m actually created to be. He encourages me when I’m disappointed with a shoot, brings me food when I’m in the midst of editing, and reminds me of my talent and ability to do good in this world with that talent.
If it wasn’t for the Brian Browns of the world, the Emilys would just be hiding their talents behind their classroom Shutterfly page and occasional family graduations or anniversaries.
