Meet Emmanuel Rivas

Today we’d like to introduce you to Emmanuel Rivas.

Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
My story isn’t anything special. Since I was young, being an artist of some caliber was always what I wanted. I was six, and I remember wanting to be a guitarist, skateboarder, actor, artist, fireman. I couldn’t ever make my mind up. I come from humble beginnings, so what was most tangible was a Pencil and paper. Art always stuck with me even after learning Other things. I know when I became 16 it was clear to me I wanted to be an artist. I was so heavily influenced by visual arts it only made sense. I won a scholarship to scad and Ai in a congressional art comp. At 16. I remember visiting scad and really wanted to go there. Things happened, and I never got to go to college, but even after I kept trying to just pursue art. There’s a lot of moment in between but yea. As far as my work presently. It’s starting to give get different places. I just feel like sometimes it’s destiny for certain things to be. Me being an artist was one of them.

Please tell us about your art.
I utilize acrylic as my medium mostly. I like to make “surrealist” style work. There’s something about reality not being exactly what it portrays that resonates with me. Seeing the hidden meaning in reality. I want to Really teach the viewer of my work something about themselves or the voice behind the painting. My artwork comes from my lessons, my faults, my love, my emotion.

What do you think about conditions for artists today? Has life become easier or harder for artists in recent years? What can cities like ours do to encourage and help art and artists thrive?
Honestly, I feel like condition can be a limitation we put on ourselves at a time, but of course, sometimes we have to play with the cards we are dealt, and it might not be the best hand. Conditions really vary. You can beat the odds tho no matter what if you believe it enough. I feel like pursuing artistry has never been the easiest to get into, but if you love it, everything will find you. I feel like putting more money into local artist murals and highlighting art in media could help local artists in cities.
