Today we’d like to introduce you to Eric Jacobsen.
Eric was born and raised in New England. He received a BA in History from Gordon College in Wenham, MA in 1989 and then went on to study fine art at the Lyme Academy of Fine Arts in Old Lyme, CT from 1991-1995. At the Academy he received training in the Beaux Arts tradition of drawing and painting from life.
He divides his time between still-life and landscape painting and he is equally inspired by both subjects. He shows his work nationwide and over the years has received numerous awards for his work, such as the “2016 People’s Choice Award”, Cape Ann Plein Air, Cape Ann, MA, “2016 Third Place”, Door County Plein Air, Peninsula School of Art, Fish Creek, WI, “2015 Artist Choice”, Weekend in the West, Evergreen Fine Art, Evergreen, CO, “2014 Best of Show”, Paint the Peninsula, Port Angeles Fine Art Center, Port Angeles, WA and “Best Body of Work”, Plein Air in the Park, Rocky Mt. Plein Air Painters, Grand Teton National Park, WY. His work is represented in some of the finest private collections throughout the country.
Please tell us about your art.
It is most important to me that my paintings convey a certain mood. I want them to be felt by the viewer without his or her having to analyze or think about them. And so, I deliberately steer clear of rendering and high detail in favor of large simple shapes with minimal detail. Emile Gruppe speaks of the “power of suggestion” and I subscribe to this way of painting. Painting is like poetry and the old adage “less is more” certainly applies to both of these endeavors.
My goal is to engage the viewer and allow him/her to interact with the painting rather than spell out every detail. Painting in this broad and loose style requires skill and lots of practice. If you don’t believe me then try it sometime. I have spent years devoted to this approach to painting and continue to develop and refine my painting process with the goal of creating strong simple statements in my work.
Choosing a creative or artistic path comes with many financial challenges. Any advice for those struggling to focus on their artwork due to financial concerns?
Most artists will figure out a way to create their artwork. This sometimes means having to do other things to pay the bills. Over the course of my career, I have had various part time jobs. I now teach painting workshops around the country to supplement my painting sales.
